  Atthatperiodcast-ironpotswereinverygeneraluse,formingtheprincipalcookingutensilsoftheworkingclass。Theartofcastinghad,however,madesuchsmallprogressinEnglandthatthepotswereforthemostpartimportedfromabroad。Darbyresolved,ifpossible,toenteruponthislucrativebranchofmanufacture;andheproceededtomakeanumberofexperimentsinpot-making。Likeotherswhohadprecededhim,hemadehisfirstmouldsofclay;buttheycrackedandburst,andonetrialfailedafteranother。Hethendeterminedtofindoutthetruemethodofmanufacturingthepots,bytravellingintothecountryfromwhencethebestwereimported,inordertomasterthegrandsecretofthetrade。WiththisobjecthewentovertoHollandintheyear1706,andafterdiligentinquiryheascertainedthattheonlysuremethodofcasting”Hiltonware,”assuchcastingswerethencalled,wasinmouldsoffinedrysand。Thiswasthewholesecret。
