  MarywentbacktoBostonandtoschool,whereoldacquaintanceswererenewedandnewonesmade。TheMissesCabotwelcomedherwithfussyanddignifiedcondescension。BarbaraHowehuggedandkissedherandvowedshehadnotseenagirlallsummerwhowashalfsosweet。

  “Whyintheworldsomeonedoesn’trunoffwithyouandmarryyouthisveryminuteIcannotsee,“declaredthevivaciousyounglady。

  Mary,whowasusedtoMissHowe’soutbursts,merelysmiled。

  BeforeMarycouldstophershehadlefttheroomandwasonherwaydownstairs。Maryfollowedamomentlater。ShehadnotexpectedavisitfromCrawford,whohadcalledalreadythatweek。Shewonderedwhyhehadcome。

  Shefoundhimintheparlor。Mrs。WyethwasoutshoppingwithMissPease,andheandshewerealone。Herosetomeetherassheentered。
