  Thisinterview,allthecircumstancesattendingit,butmostparticularlytheformidableexpressionofmyuncle’scountenancewhilehetalked,thoughhypothetically,ofmurder,combinedtoarouseallmyworstsuspicionsofhim。Idreadedtolookuponthefacethathadsorecentlyworntheappallingliveryofguiltandmalignity。Iregardeditwiththemingledfearandloathingwithwhichonelooksuponanobjectwhichhastorturedtheminanightmare。

  Ithenlefttheapartment,scarcelyknowingwhattothinkofthestrangeinterviewwhichhadjusttakenplace。

  Duringallthistryingperiod,IhadfoundinfiniteconsolationinthesocietyandsympathyofmydearcousinEmily。

  IhadonedayleftthehousewithmycousinEmily,inordertotakearambleofconsiderablelength,forthepurposeofsketchingsomefavouriteviews,andwehadwalkedabouthalfamilewhenI

  IjoinedmycousinEmilyquiteoutofbreath。Ineednotsaythatmyheadwastoofullofotherthingstothinkmuchofdrawingforthatday。Iimpartedtoherfranklythecauseofmyalarms,butatthesametimeasgentlyasIcould;andwithtearsshepromisedvigilance,anddevotion,andlove。IneverhadreasonforamomenttorepenttheunreservedconfidencewhichIthenreposedinher。ShewasnolesssurprisedthanIattheunexpectedappearanceofEdward,whosedepartureforFranceneitherofushadforamomentdoubted,butwhichwasnowprovedbyhisactualpresencetobenothingmorethananimposture,practised,Ifeared,fornogoodend。
