  Herewascomfortindeed!andquiteassoonasSirThomascouldplacedependenceonsuchsourcesofgood,Edmundwascontributingtohisfather’seasebyimprovementintheonlypointinwhichhehadgivenhimpainbefore——

  improvementinhisspirits。AfterwanderingaboutandsittingundertreeswithFannyallthesummerevenings,hehadsowelltalkedhismindintosubmissionastobeverytolerablycheerfulagain。

  ThesewerethecircumstancesandthehopeswhichgraduallybroughttheiralleviationtoSirThomas,deadeninghissenseofwhatwaslost,andinpartreconcilinghimtohimself;

  andofthenecessityofself-denialandhumility,hefearedtheyhadneverheardfromanylipsthatcouldprofitthem。

  Bitterlydidhedeploreadeficiencywhichnowhecouldscarcelycomprehendtohavebeenpossible。

  Wretchedlydidhefeel,thatwithallthecostandcareofananxiousandexpensiveeducation,hehadbroughtuphisdaughterswithouttheirunderstandingtheirfirstduties,orhisbeingacquaintedwiththeircharacterandtemper。
