  ThistimeTheobaldfeltquiteathomeinthehouseofhisnewfriends——forsoMrsAllabyinsistedthatheshouldcallthem。Shetook,shesaid,suchamotherlyinterestinyoungmen,especiallyinclergymen。Theobaldbelievedeverywordshesaid,ashehadbelievedhisfatherandallhiseldersfromhisyouthup。Christinasatnexthimatdinnerandplayedhercardsnolessjudiciouslythanshehadplayedtheminhersister’sbed-room。Shesmiledandhersmilewasoneofherstrongpointswheneverhespoketoher;shewentthroughallherlittleartlessnessesandsetforthallherlittlewaresinwhatshebelievedtobetheirmosttakingaspect。

  Nevertheless,itwassometimebeforeTheobaldcouldbringhiscouragetothestickingpointofactuallyproposing。Hemadeitquiteclearthathebelievedhimselftobemuchsmitten,butmonthaftermonthwentby,duringwhichtherewasstillsomuchhopeinTheobaldthatMrAllabydarednotdiscoverthathewasabletodohisdutyforhimself,andwasgettingimpatientatthenumberofhalf-guineashewasdisbursing——andyettherewasnoproposal。

  Christina’smotherassuredhimthatshewasthebestdaughterinthewholeworld,andwouldbeapricelesstreasuretothemanwhomarriedher。TheobaldechoedMrsAllaby’ssentimentswithwarmth,butstill,thoughhevisitedtheRectorytwoorthreetimesaweek,besidescomingoveronSundays——hedidnotpropose。“Sheisheart-

  MrsCoweytriedthejealousymanoeuvreandhintedatapossiblerival。Theobaldwas,orpretendedtobe,verymuchalarmed;alittlerudimentarypangofjealousyshotacrosshisbosomandhebegantobelievewithpridethathewasnotonlyinlove,butdesperatelyinloveorhewouldneverfeelsojealous。
