  hepursuedhismarch,andfoundanenemyonthethrone。Inhistrialbeforeapartialjudgeagainstapopularantagonist,hewasconvictedofvanityandfalsehood;andafineoftwohundredthousandpiecesofgoldeitherexhaustedhispovertyorprovedhisrapaciousness。TheunworthytreatmentofTarikwasrevengedbyasimilarindignity;andtheveterancommander,afterapublicwhipping,stoodawholedayinthesunbeforethepalacegate,tillheobtainedadecentexile,underthepiousnameofapilgrimagetoMecca。TheresentmentofthecaliphmighthavebeensatiatedwiththeruinofMusa;buthisfearsdemandedtheextirpationofapotentandinjuredfamily。AsentenceofdeathwasintimatedwithsecrecyandspeedtothetrustyservantsofthethronebothinAfricaandSpain;andtheforms,ifnotthesubstance,ofjusticeweresupersededinthisbloodyexecution。

  InthemoschorpalaceofCordova,Abdelazizwasslainbytheswordsoftheconspirators;theyaccusedtheirgovernorofclaimingthehonorsofroyalty;andhisscandalousmarriagewithEgilona,thewidowofRoderic,offendedtheprejudicesbothoftheChristiansandMoslems。Byarefinementofcruelty,theheadofthesonwaspresentedtothefather,withaninsultingquestion,whetherheacknowledgedthefeaturesoftherebel?\"I
