ONthefollowingdaytherewasmuchfeastingamongsttheRomanychalsofMr。Petulengro’sparty。ThroughouttheforenoontheRomanychiesdidscarcelyanythingbutcookflesh,andthefleshwhichtheycookedwasswine’sflesh。
Abouttwoo’clock,thechalsdividingthemselvesintovariousparties,satdownandpartookofthefare,whichwaspartlyroasted,partlysodden。IdinedthatdaywithMr。Petulengroandhiswifeandfamily,Ursula,Mr。andMrs。Chikno,andSylvesterandhistwochildren。Sylvester,itwillbeaswelltosay,wasawidower,andhadconsequentlynoonetocookhisvictualsforhim,supposinghehadany,whichwasnotalwaysthecase,Sylvester’saffairsbeingseldominaprosperousstate。Hewasnotedforhisbadsuccessintrafficking,notwithstandingthemanyhintswhichhereceivedfromJasper,underwhoseprotectionhehadplacedhimself,evenasTawnoChiknohaddone,whohimself,asthereaderhasheardonaformeroccasion,wasanythingbutawealthysubject,thoughhewasatalltimesbetteroffthanSylvester,theLazarusoftheRomanytribe。
