  ThePromisedVisit—RomanFashion—WizardandWitch—

  CatchingatWords—TheTwoFemales—DressingofHair—TheNewRoads—Belle’sAlteredAppearance—HerselfAgain。

  ABOUTmid—dayMr。andMrs。Petulengrocametothedingletopaythepromisedvisit。Belle,atthetimeoftheirarrival,wasinhertent,butIwasatthefire—place,engagedinhammeringpartoftheouter—tire,ordefence,whichhadcomeofffromoneofthewheelsofmyvehicle。OnperceivingthemIforthwithwenttoreceivethem。Mr。PetulengrowasdressedinRomanfashion,withasomewhatsmartly—cutsporting—coat,thebuttonsofwhichwerehalf—crowns—andawaistcoat,scarletandblack,thebuttonsofwhichwerespadedhalf—

  guineas;hisbreecheswereofastuffhalfvelveteen,halfcorduroy,thecordsexceedinglybroad。Hehadleggingsofbuffcloth,furredatthebottom;anduponhisfeetwerehighlows。Underhisleftarmwasalongblackwhaleboneriding—whip,witharedlash,andanimmensesilverknob。

  Uponhisheadwasahatwithahighpeak,somewhatofthekindwhichtheSpaniardscallCALANE,somuchinfavourwiththebravosofSevilleandMadrid。Now,whenIhaveaddedthatMr。Petulengrohadonaveryfinewhitehollandshirt,I

  TheFestival—TheGypsySong—PiramusofRome—TheScotchman—GypsyNames。

  ONthefollowingdaytherewasmuchfeastingamongsttheRomanychalsofMr。Petulengro’sparty。ThroughouttheforenoontheRomanychiesdidscarcelyanythingbutcookflesh,andthefleshwhichtheycookedwasswine’sflesh。

  Abouttwoo’clock,thechalsdividingthemselvesintovariousparties,satdownandpartookofthefare,whichwaspartlyroasted,partlysodden。IdinedthatdaywithMr。Petulengroandhiswifeandfamily,Ursula,Mr。andMrs。Chikno,andSylvesterandhistwochildren。Sylvester,itwillbeaswelltosay,wasawidower,andhadconsequentlynoonetocookhisvictualsforhim,supposinghehadany,whichwasnotalwaysthecase,Sylvester’saffairsbeingseldominaprosperousstate。Hewasnotedforhisbadsuccessintrafficking,notwithstandingthemanyhintswhichhereceivedfromJasper,underwhoseprotectionhehadplacedhimself,evenasTawnoChiknohaddone,whohimself,asthereaderhasheardonaformeroccasion,wasanythingbutawealthysubject,thoughhewasatalltimesbetteroffthanSylvester,theLazarusoftheRomanytribe。

  Allourpartyatewithagoodappetite,exceptmyself,who,feelingrathermelancholythatday,hadlittledesiretoeat。

  Ididnot,liketheothers,partakeofthepork,butgotmydinnerentirelyoffthebodyofasquirrelwhichhadbeenshotthedaybeforebyachalofthenameofPiramus,who,besidesbeingagoodshot,wascelebratedforhisskillinplayingonthefiddle。Duringthedinnerahornfilledwithalepassedfrequentlyaround;Idrankofitmorethanonce,andfeltinspiritedbythedraughts。Therepastconcluded,Sylvesterandhischildrendepartedtotheirtent,andMr。

  Petulengro,Tawno,andmyself,gettingup,wentandlaydownunderashadyhedge,whereMr。Petulengro,lightinghispipe,begantosmoke,andwhereTawnopresentlyfellasleep。Iwasabouttofallasleepalso,whenIheardthesoundofmusicandsong。Piramuswasplayingonthefiddle,whilstMrs。

  Chikno,whohadavoiceofherown,wassingingintonessharpenough,butofgreatpower,agypsysong:—
