  WestoverfoundhimlessamusingthanhehadonhisowngroundatLion’sHead,andtastedaqualityofcommonplaceinhisdeliveranceswhichmadehimquestionwhetherhehadnot,perhaps,alwaysowedmoretothisenvironmentthanhehadsuspected。Buttheypartedupontermsofmutualrespectandinthecommonhopeofmeetingagain。WhitwellpromisedtoletWestoverknowwhatheheardofJeff,but,whenthepainterhadwalkedthephilosopherhometohishotel,hefoundamessageawaitinghimathisstudiofromJeffdirect:

  ThesumofJeff’sletterwhenitcame,anditcametoWestoverandnottoWhitwell,wastorequestthepaintertoseealawyerinhisbehalf,andputhisinsurancepoliciesinhishands,withfullauthoritytoguardhisinterestsinthematter。HetoldWestoverwherehispolicieswouldbefound,andenclosedthekeyofhisboxintheSafetyVaults,withaduedemandforWestover’sadmissiontoit。Heregisteredhisletter,andhejocoselypromisedWestovertodoasmuchforhimsomeday,inpleadingthattherewasreallynooneelsehecouldturnto。Heputthewholebusinessuponhim,andWestoverdischargedhimselfofitasbrieflyashecouldbydeliveringthepaperstothelawyerhehadalreadyconsultedforWhitwell。

  Hebelievedhimcapableofthrowingawayadvantagesfordisadvantagesinathingofthatkind,buthethoughtitmoreprobablethathehadfalleninlovewithonewhomhewouldlosenothingbywinning。ItdidnotseematallimpossiblethatheshouldhaveagainmetBessieLynde,andthattheyshouldhavemadeuptheirquarrel,orwhateveritwas。JeffwouldconsiderthathehaddonehiswholedutybyCynthia,andthathewasfreetorenewhissuitwithBessie;andtherewasnothinginBessie’scharacter,asWestoverunderstoodit,topreventhertakinghimbackuponaverysmallshowofrepentanceiftheneededemotionswereinprospect。
