  abrotherthiefhadrobbedhimwhileheslept,andgoneashoreatsomeintermediatelanding。

  CHAPTER16

  SoldDowntheRiverIfyoupickupastarvingdogandmakehimprosperous,hewillnotbiteyou。Thisistheprincipaldifferencebetweenadogandaman。

  ——Pudd’nheadWilson’sCalendarWeallknowaboutthehabitsoftheant,weknowallaboutthehabitsofthebee,butweknownothingatallaboutthehabitsoftheoyster。Itseemsalmostcertainthatwehavebeenchoosingthewrongtimeforstudyingtheoyster。

  Finallyshestartedup,andsaidshehadfoundawayout。Tomwasalmostsuffocatedbythejoyofthissuddengoodnews。Roxanasaid:

  Forawholeweekhewasnotabletosleepwell,somuchthevillainywhichhehadplayeduponhistrustingmotherpreyeduponhisragofconscience;butafterthathebegantogetcomfortableagain,andwaspresentlyabletosleeplikeanyothermiscreant。

  TheboatboreRoxyawayfromSt。Louisatfourintheafternoon,andshestoodonthelowerguardabaftthepaddleboxandwatchedTomthroughabluroftearsuntilhemeltedintothethrongofpeopleanddisappeared;thenshelookednomore,butsatthereonacoilofcablecryingtillfarintothenight。

  Whenshewenttoherfoulsteeragebunkatlast,betweentheclashingengines,itwasnottosleep,butonlytowaitforthemorning,and,waiting,grieve。

  Andwiththewhisperingswentchucklingsandnudgingsandwinks,andsuchthingshaveaneffect。Thetwinsconsideredthatsuccessintheelectionwouldreinstatethem,andthatdefeatwouldworkthemirreparabledamage。Thereforetheyworkedhard,butnotharderthanJudgeDriscollandTomworkedagainstthemintheclosingdaysofthecanvass。Tom’sconducthadremainedsoletter—perfectduringtwowholemonthsnow,thathisunclenotonlytrustedhimwithmoneywithwhichtopersuadevoters,buttrustedhimtogoandgetithimselfoutofthesafeintheprivatesittingroom。

  TheclosingspeechofthecampaignwasmadebyJudgeDriscoll,andhemadeitagainstbothoftheforeigners。Itwasdisastrouslyeffective。Hepouredoutriversofridiculeuponthem,andforcedthebigmassmeetingtolaughandapplaud。

  Hescoffedatthemasadventures,mountebanks,sideshowriffraff,dimemuseumfreaks;heassailedtheirshowytitleswithmeasurelessderision;hesaidtheywereback—alleybarbersdisguisedasnobilities,peanutpeddlersmasqueradingasgentlemen,organ—grindersbereftoftheirbrothermonkey。

  Atlasthestoppedandstoodstill。Hewaiteduntiltheplacehadbecomeabsolutelysilentandexpectant,thenhedeliveredhisdeadliestshot;delivereditwithice—coldseriousnessanddeliberation,withasignificantemphasisupontheclosingwords:
