  JustaboutsixmonthsbeforemydepartureforSpain,IfirstmettheChevalierdesGrieux。ThoughIrarelyquittedmyretreat,stilltheinterestIfeltinmychild’swelfareinducedmeoccasionallytoundertakeshortjourneys,which,however,Itookgoodcaretoabridgeasmuchaspossible。

  IwasonedayreturningfromRouen,whereIhadbeen,atherrequest,toattendacausethenpendingbeforetheParliamentofNormandy,respectinganinheritancetowhichIhadclaimsderivedfrommymaternalgrandfather。HavingtakentheroadbyEvreux,whereIsleptthefirstnight,Ionthefollowingday,aboutdinner-time,reachedPassy,adistanceoffiveorsixleagues。I

  wasamazed,onenteringthisquiettown,toseealltheinhabitantsincommotion。Theywerepouringfromtheirhousesincrowds,towardsthegateofasmallinn,immediatelybeforewhichtwocoveredvansweredrawnup。Theirhorsesstillinharness,andreekingfromfatigueandheat,showedthatthecortegehadonlyjustarrived。Istoppedforamomenttolearnthecauseofthetumult,butcouldgainlittleinformationfromthecuriousmobastheyrushedby,heedlessofmyenquiries,andhasteningimpatientlytowardstheinnintheutmostconfusion。Atlengthanarcherofthecivicguard,wearinghisbandolier,andcarryingacarbineonhisshoulder,appearedatthegate;so,beckoninghimtowardsme,Ibeggedtoknowthecauseoftheuproar。
