Thehabitisthatoftheformer，thetuberclesarethoseofthelatter，whilethespinesaresomewhatdifferentfromeither。Thenumberofcentralspinesinthesespecimensisveryhardtodetermine，asontheadulttubercletheyallassumearadialposition。Theusualadultarrangementisanapparentabsenceofcentralspines；10to12rigid，spreadingandmoreorlessrecurvedradials（increasinginlengthfromthelowest），whicharemostlywhiteortheuppermoreorlessdusky；andabove，justbehindtheradialrow，2or3stoutrecurved-ascendingspines，whicharewhitewithtipsmoreorlessreddish-black，oneofthespinesusuallymuchstouterandlongerthantheothers。Thisformmayrepresentadistinctspecies，butitseemsveryunsafetoaddspeciestotheC。scolymoidesgroupwithoutthefullestinformation。

Amostperplexingquestionofrelationshipispresentedbytheformsthathavebeencalledpectinatus，scolymoides，sulcatus（calcaratus），Echinus，andtheMexicanformsradians，impexicomus，corniferus。Itmaybethattheyareallmerelyvarietiesofonestrongpolymorphictype，butourknowledgeofcorniferusissoincomplete，andmaterialofotherformsissoscanty，thatIcannotventuretomakesuchanassertion。
However，itseemsprobablethatradians，pectinatus，scolymoides，sulcatusandEchinusallhavegreenfruit，whileinimpexicomusandcorniferusitisred。Ithasalsoseemedpropertomergeradiansandpectinatus，alsoimpexicomusandcorniferus，andtorefersulcatustoscolymoidesasavariety。Thesesevenformsarethusreducedatleasttofourspecies。
