SherlockHolmestookthelampandledtheway,forThaddeusSholto’steethwerechatteringinhishead。SoshakenwashethatIhadtopassmyhandunderhisarmaswewentupthestairs,forhiskneesweretremblingunderhim。Twiceasweascended,Holmeswhippedhislensoutofhispocketandcarefullyexaminedmarkswhichappearedtometobemereshapelesssmudgesofdustuponthecocoanut-mattingwhichservedasastair-carpet。Hewalkedslowlyfromsteptostep,holdingthelamplow,andshootingkeenglancestorightandleft。
MissMorstanhadremainedbehindwiththefrightenedhousekeeper。
Thethirdflightofstairsendedinastraightpassageofsomelength,withagreatpictureinIndiantapestryupontherightofitandthreedoorsupontheleft。Holmesadvancedalongitinthesameslowandmethodicalway,whilewekeptcloseathisheels,withourlongblackshadowsstreamingbackwarddownthecorridor。Thethirddoorwasthatwhichwewereseeking。Holmesknockedwithoutreceivinganyanswer,andthentriedtoturnthehandleandforceitopen。Itwaslockedontheinside,however,andbyabroadandpowerfulbolt,aswecouldseewhenwesetourlampupagainstit。Thekeybeingturned,however,theholewasnotentirelyclosed。
SherlockHolmesbentdowntoitandinstantlyroseagainwithasharpintakingofthebreath。
