  SherlockHolmestookhisbottlefromthecornerofthemantelpiece,andhishypodermicsyringefromitsneatmoroccocase。

  ThreetimesadayformanymonthsIhadwitnessedthisperformance,butcustomhadnotreconciledmymindtoit。Onthecontrary,fromdaytodayIhadbecomemoreirritableatthesight,andmyconscienceswellednightlywithinmeatthethoughtthatI

  hadlackedthecouragetoprotest。AgainandagainIhadregisteredavowthatIshoulddelivermysouluponthesubject;buttherewasthatinthecool,nonchalantairofmycompanionwhichmadehimthelastmanwithwhomonewouldcaretotakeanythingapproachingtoaliberty。Hisgreatpowers,hismasterlymanner,andtheexperiencewhichIhadhadofmanyextraordinaryqualities,allmademediffidentandbackwardincrossinghim。
