  Allthesecircumstances,sonaturalandsotrivial,weregravelylistenedtoasproofs,or,atleast,asaffordingstrongsuspicionsthatRebeccahadunlawfulcorrespondencewithmysticalpowers。

  Buttherewaslessequivocaltestimony,whichthecredulityoftheassembly,orofthegreaterpart,greedilyswallowed,howeverincredible。Oneofthesoldiershadseenherworkacureuponawoundedman,broughtwiththemtothecastleofTorquilstone。

  HiscomradehadbeenawitnessfromaneighbouringbattlementofthescenebetwixtRebeccaandBois-Guilbert,whenshewasuponthepointofprecipitatingherselffromthetopofthetower。

  Nottobebehindhiscompanion,thisfellowstated,thathehadseenRebeccaperchherselfupontheparapetoftheturret,andtheretaketheformofamilk-whiteswan,underwhichappearancesheflittedthreetimesroundthecastleofTorquilstone;
