  TheRomansthemselvesusedweaponsofbronzewhentheycouldnotobtainironinsufficientquantity,andmanyoftheRomanweaponsdugoutoftheancienttumuliareofthatmetal。Theypossessedtheartoftemperingandhardeningbronzetosuchadegreeastoenablethemtomanufactureswordswithitofaprettygoodedge;andinthosecountrieswhichtheypenetrated,theirbronzeimplementsgraduallysupplantedthosewhichhadbeenpreviouslyfashionedofstone。GreatquantitiesofbronzetoolshavebeenfoundindifferentpartsofEngland,——sometimesinheaps,asiftheyhadbeenthrownawayinbasketfulsasthingsoflittlevalue。IthasbeenconjecturedthatwhentheRomanscameintoBritaintheyfoundtheinhabitants,especiallythosetothenorthward,inverynearlythesamestateasCaptainCookandothervoyagersfoundtheinhabitantsoftheSouthSeaIslands;thattheBritonspartedwiththeirfoodandvaluablesfortoolsofinferiormetalmadeinimitationoftheirstoneones;
