  TheearlyhistoryofironinBritainisnecessarilyveryobscure。

  WhentheRomansinvadedthecountry,themetalseemstohavebeenalreadyknowntothetribesalongthecoast。Thenativeshadprobablysmelteditthemselvesintheirrudebloomeries,orobtaineditfromthePhoeniciansinsmallquantitiesinexchangeforskinsandfood,ortin。Wemust,however,regardthestoriestoldoftheancientBritishchariotsarmedwithswordsorscythesasaltogetherapocryphal。Theexistenceofironinsufficientquantitytobeusedforsuchapurposeisincompatiblewithcontemporaryfacts,andunsupportedbyasinglevestigeremainingtoourtime。Thecountrywasthenmostlyforest,andtheroadsdidnotasyetexistuponwhichchariotscouldbeused;whilstironwastooscarcetobemountedasscythesuponchariots,whenthewarriorsthemselveswanteditforswords。TheoratorCicero,inalettertoTrebatius,thenservingwiththearmyinBritain,sarcasticallyadvisedhimtocaptureandconveyoneofthesevehiclestoItalyforexhibition;butwedonothearthatanyspecimenoftheBritishwar-chariotwaseverseeninRome。
