  Therewasarustle,asob,andthenatimidvoicesaid,chokingly,“Yes,sir。“

  JudgeBaxterpattedheronthehead。ZoethandShadrachlookedsolemnandillatease。Mary-’Gustalookedatthefloorandsniffeddolefully。

  “Mary-’Gusta,“saidtheJudge,“thesetwogentlemenareoldfriendsofyourfather’sand,“withapardonablestretchingofthetruth,“theyhavecomeallthewayfromSouthHarnisstomeetyou。Nowyoumustshakehandswiththem。Theylikelittlegirls。“

  Baxter,surprisedandpuzzled,ranafterherandpreventedherclimbingintothecarriage。

  Thechildstruggledandthen,burstingintoastormofsobs,hidherfaceinthedustcover。
