  ThewhitehouseonPhinney’sHilllookeddesolateandmournfulwhenthebuggycontainingJudgeBaxterandhistwocompanionsdroveintotheyard。ThewagonbelongingtoMr。Hallett,theundertaker,wasatthefrontdoor,andHallettandhisassistantwereloadinginthefoldingchairs。Mr。Hallettwaswhistlingapopularmelody,but,somehoworother,themusiconlyemphasizedthelonesomeness。Thereislittlecheerinanundertaker’swhistle。

  CaptainGould,actingundertheJudge’sorders,pilotedhishorseupthedrivewayandintothebackyard。Theanimalwasmadefasttothebackfenceandthethreemenalightedfromthebuggyandwalkeduptothesidedoorofthehouse。

  “Say,Judge,“whisperedtheCaptain,astheyhaltedbythestep,“youdon’tcal’lateIcanfindoutwholoadedupthatmusic-boxchaironme,doyou?IfIcouldmeetthatfellerfortwoorthreeminutesImightfeelmorereconciledatbein’foolenoughtocomeoverhere。“
