  TheywereevenremindedoftenoftheirdistantfriendHorne,foreverytimetheycrossedoneofthechiefpiazzastheysawthestatueofCosimodeMedicilookingdownuponthem。

  Inthisbeautifuloldcity,sofullofreposeasitlies“asleepinthesun,“

  Mrs。Browning’shealthalmostleapt,soswiftwasheradvancetowardsvigour。

  Thathappyfirstwintertheypassed“inthemostsecludedmanner,readingVasari,anddreamingdreamsofseeingVeniceinthesummer。“

  ButearlyinApril,whentheswallowshadflowninlandabovethepinesofViareggio,andShelley’sfavouritelittleAziolawashootingsilverlyamongthehollowvalesofCarrara,thetwopoetspreparedtoleavewhatthefrailerofthemcalled“thisperchofPisa。“

  Butwithallitscharmandhappyassociations,thelittlecitywasdull。

  “Evenhumanfacesdivinearequite`rococo’withme,“

  Mrs。Browningwrotetoafriend。ThechangetoFlorencewasawelcomeonetoboth。Browninghadalreadybeenthere,buttohiswifeitwasasthefulfilmentofadream。

  Theydidnotatfirstgotothatromanticoldpalacewhichwillbeforeversociatewiththeauthorof“CasaGuidiWindows“,butfoundaccommodationinamorecentrallocality。

  WhentheJuneheatscame,husbandandwifebothdeclaredforAncona,thepicturesquelittletownwhichdreamsoutupontheAdriatic。

  Butthoughsoclosetothesea,Anconaisinsummertimealmostinsufferablyhot。InsteadoffindingitcoolerthanFlorence,itwasasthoughtheyhadleaptrightintoacauldron。

  Doubtlessitwaswrittenfornootherreasonthantheurgencyofsong,forinitarethelovingallusionstohiswife,“MYangelwithmetoo,“

  and“myloveishere。“Threetimestheywenttothechapel,hetellsusintheseventhstanza,todrinkintotheirsouls’contentthebeautyof“dearGuercino’s“picture。Browninghasrarelyutteredthepurelypersonalnoteofhisinnerlife。Itisthisthataffordsapeculiarvalueto“TheGuardianAngel“,overandaboveitstechnicalbeauty。

  IntheconcludinglinesofthestanzasIamabouttoquotehegivesthesupremeexpressiontowhatwashisdeepestfaith,hisprofoundestsong-motive。

  “IwouldnotlookupthitherpastthyheadBecausethedooropes,likethatchild,Iknow,ForIshouldhavethygraciousfaceinstead,ThoubirdofGod!AndwiltthoubendmelowLikehim,andlay,likehis,myhandstogether,Andliftthemuptopray,andgentlytetherMe,asthylambthere,withthygarment’sspread?

  IthinkhowIshouldviewtheearthandskiesAndsea,whenonceagainmybrowwasbaredAfterthyhealing,withsuchdifferenteyes。

  Whatfurthermaybesoughtforordeclared?“

  AftertheAdriaticcoastwasleft,theyhesitatedastoreturningtoFlorence,thedoctorshavinglaidsuchstressontheclimaticsuitabilityofPisaforMrs。Browning。Butshefeltsosureofherselfinhernewstrengththatitwasdecidedtoadventureuponatleastonewinterinthequeen-city。

  TheywerefortunateinobtainingaresidenceintheoldpalacecalledCasaGuidi,intheViaMaggiore,overagainstthechurchofSanFelice,andhere,withafewbriefintervals,theylivedtilldeathseparatedthem。

  Onthelittleterraceoutsidetherewasmorenobleversefashionedintheartist’screativesilencethanwecaneverbeawareof:

  butwhatasacredplaceitmusteverbefortheloverofpoetry!

  There,oneominoussultryeve,Browning,broodingoverthestoryofabygoneRomancrime,foreshadowed“TheRingandtheBook“,andthere,inthemanyyearshedweltinCasaGuidi,hewrotesomeofhisfinershorterpoems。There,also,“AuroraLeigh“wasborn,andmanyalyricfreshwiththedewofgenius。WhohasnotlookedattheoldsunwornhouseandfailedtothinkofthatnightwheneachsquarewindowofSanFelicewasaglowwithfestivallights,andwhenthesummerlightningsfellsilentlyinbroadflamefromcloudtocloud:orhasfailedtohear,downthenarrowstreet,alittlechildgosinging,’neathCasaGuidiwindowsbythechurch,`Obellaliberta,Obella!’

  Bettereventhanthese,forhappydwellingupon,isthepoemthetwopoetslived。Morninganddaywerefullofwork,study,orthatpleasurableidlenesswhichfortheartistissooftenhisbestinspiration。Here,onthelittleterrace,theyusedtosittogether,orwalkslowlytoandfro,inconversationthatwasonlylesseloquentthansilence。HereonedaytheyreceivedaletterfromHorne。

  ThereisnothingofparticularnoteinMrs。Browning’sreply,andyettherearenotafewofherpoemswewouldmissratherthanthesechancewordsdelicateoutlinesleftforthereadertofillin:

  “Wewerereadingyourletter,together,onourlittleterrace

  walkingupanddownreadingitImeanthelettertoRobert

  andthen,attheend,suddenlyturning,lo,justattheedgeofthestones,justbetweenthebalustrades,andalreadyflutteringinabreathofwindandabouttoflyawayoverSanFelice’schurch,wecaughtaglimpseofthefeatherofanotetoE。B。B。Hownearweweretothelossofit,tobesure!“

  Happierstillmusthavebeenthequieteveningsinlatespringandsummer,when,theoneshroudedagainstpossiblechills,theotherbare-headedandwithloosenedcoat,walkedslowlytoandfrointhedark,consciousof“abusyhumansense“below,butsolitaryontheirbalconybeyondthelamplitroom。

  “Whileinandouttheterrace-plants,androundOnebranchoftalldatura,waxedandwanedThelamp-flyluredthere,wantingthewhiteflower。“

  AnAmericanfriendhasputonrecordhisimpressionsofthetwopoets,andtheirhomeatthistime。HehadbeencalleduponbyBrowning,andbyhiminvitedtotaketeaatCasaGuidithesameevening。

  Therethevisitorsaw,“seatedatthetea-tableofthegreatroomofthepalaceinwhichtheywereliving,averysmall,veryslightwoman,withverylongcurlsdroopingforward,almostacrosstheeyes,hangingtothebosom,andquiteconcealingthepale,smallface,fromwhichthepiercinginquiringeyeslookedoutsensitivelyatthestranger。

  Risingfromherchair,sheputoutcordiallythethinwhitehandofaninvalid,andinafewmomentstheywerepleasantlychatting,whilethehusbandstrodeupanddowntheroom,joiningintheconversationwithavigour,humour,eagerness,andaffluenceofcuriouslorewhich,withhistrenchantthoughtandsubtlesympathy,makehimoneofthemostcharmingandinspiringofcompanions。“

  Intheautumnthesamefriend,joinedbyoneortwootheracquaintances,wentwiththeBrowningstoVallombrosaforacoupleofdays,greatlytoMrs。Browning’sdelight,forwhomthenamehadhadapeculiarfascinationeversinceshehadfirstencountereditinMilton。

  Shewasconveyedupthesteepwaytowardsthemonasteryinagreatbasket,withoutwheels,drawnbytwooxen:though,asshetellsMissMitford,shedidnotgetintothemonasteryafterall,sheandhermaidbeingturnedawaybythemonks“forthesinofwomanhood。“

  Shewastoomuchofaninvalidtoclimbthesteeperheights,butlovedtolieunderthegreatchestnutsuponthehill-slopesneartheconvent。Attwilighttheywenttothelittleconvent-chapel,andthereBrowningsatdownattheorganandplayedsomeofthoseoldermelodieshelovedsowell。
