  Itisinnopresumptuousspirit,butoutofmyprofoundadmirationofthislong-lovedandoften-read,thissuperbpoem,thatI,forone,wishitcomprisedbutthePrologue,thePleaofGuido,“Caponsacchi“,“Pompilia“,“ThePope“,andGuido’slastDefence。

  Icannothelpthinkingthatthisistheforminwhichitwillbereadintheyearstocome。Thuscircumscribed,itseemstometoberoundedandcomplete,agreatworkofartvoidofthedross,themeredebriswhichthetrueartistdiscards。Butasitis,inallitslordlypoeticstrengthandflaggingimpulse,isitnot,afterall,thetrueclimactericofBrowning’sgenius?

  “TheInnAlbum“,adramaticpoemofextraordinarypower,hassomuchmoremarkedlythedefectsofhisqualitiesthatItakeittobe,attheutmost,thepoiseofthefirstgradualrefluence。
