  AnotherplacewhichseemstomakeforanaturalimmortalityofthesoulisthatwhereourSavioursaiththatAbraham,Isaac,andJacobareliving:butthisisspokenofthepromiseofGod,andoftheircertitudetoriseagain,notofalifethenactual;andinthesamesensethatGodsaidtoAdamthatonthedayheshouldeatoftheforbiddenfruit,heshouldcertainlydie;fromthattimeforwardhewasadeadmanbysentence;butnotbyexecution,tillalmostathousandyearsafter。SoAbraham,Isaac,andJacobwerealivebypromise,then,whenChristspoke;butarenotactuallytilltheresurrection。AndthehistoryofDivesandLazarusmakenothingagainstthis,ifwetakeit,asitis,foraparable。

  ButtherebeotherplacesoftheNewTestamentwhereanimmortalityseemethtobedirectlyattributedtothetothewicked。

  Foritisevidentthattheyshallallrisetojudgement。Anditissaidbesides,inmanyplaces,thattheyshallgointo“everlastingfire,everlastingtorments,everlastingpunishments;andthatthewormofconscienceneverdieth“;andallthisiscomprehendedinthewordeverlastingdeath,whichisordinarilyinterpreted“everlastinglifeintorments“:andyetIcanfindnowherethatanymanshallliveintormentseverlastingly。Also,itseemethhardtosaythatGod,whoistheFatherofmercies,thatdothinheavenandearthallthatHewill;thathaththeheartsofallmeninHisdisposing;thatworkethinmenbothtodoandtowill;andwithoutwhosefreegiftamanhathneitherinclinationtogoodnorrepentanceofevil,shouldpunishmen’stransgressionswithoutanyendoftime,andwithalltheextremityoftorturethatmencanimagine,andmore。Wearethereforetoconsiderwhatthemeaningisofeverlastingfire,andotherthelikephrasesofScripture。

  IhaveshownalreadythatthekingdomofGodbyChristbeginnethatthedayofjudgement:thatinthatday,thefaithfulshallriseagain,withgloriousandspiritualbodiesandbehissubjectsinthathiskingdom,whichshallbeeternal:thattheyshallneithermarry,norbegiveninmarriage,noreatanddrink,astheydidintheirnaturalbodies;butliveforeverintheirindividualpersons,withoutthespecificaleternityofgeneration:andthatthereprobatesalsoshallriseagain,toreceivepunishmentsfortheirsins:asalsothatthoseoftheelect,whichshallbealiveintheirearthlybodiesatthatday,shallhavetheirbodiessuddenlychanged,andmadespiritualandimmortal。Butthatthebodiesofthereprobate,whomakethekingdomofSatan,shallalsobegloriousorspiritualbodies,orthattheyshallbeastheangelsofGod,neithereating,nordrinking,norengendering;orthattheirlifeshallbeeternalintheirindividualpersons,asthelifeofeveryfaithfulmanis,orasthelifeofAdamhadbeenifhehadnotsinned,thereisnoplaceofScripturetoproveit;saveonlytheseplacesconcerningeternaltorments,whichmayotherwisebeinterpreted。

  Fromwhencemaybeinferredthat,astheelectaftertheresurrectionshallberestoredtotheestatewhereinAdamwasbeforehehadsinned;sothereprobateshallbeintheestatethatAdamandhisposteritywereinafterthesincommitted;savingthatGodpromisedaredeemertoAdam,andsuchofhisseedasshouldtrustinhimandrepent,butnottothemthatshoulddieintheirsins,asdothereprobate。

  Thesethingsconsidered,thetextsthatmention“eternalfire,“

  “eternaltorments,“or“thewormthatneverdieth,“contradictnotthedoctrineofasecondandeverlastingdeath,intheproperandnaturalsenseoftheworddeath。ThefireortormentspreparedforthewickedinGehenna,Tophet,orinwhatplacesoever,maycontinueforever;andtheremayneverwantwickedmentobetormentedinthem,thoughnoteverynoranyoneeternally。Forthewicked,beingleftintheestatetheywereinafterAdam’ssin,mayattheresurrectionliveastheydid,marry,andgiveinmarriage,andhavegrossandcorruptiblebodies,asallmankindnowhave;andconsequentlymayengenderperpetually,aftertheresurrection,astheydidbefore:forthereisnoplaceofScripturetothecontrary。ForSt。Paul,speakingoftheresurrection,understandethitonlyoftheresurrectiontolifeeternal,andnottheresurrectiontopunishment。*

  Uponthisdoctrineofthenaturaleternityofseparatedsoulsisfounded,asIsaid,thedoctrineofpurgatory。Forsupposingeternallifebygraceonly,thereisnolifebutthelifeofthebody;andnoimmortalitytilltheresurrection。ThetextsforpurgatoryallegedbyBellarmineoutofthecanonicalScriptureoftheOldTestamentare,first,thefastingofDavidforSaulandJonathan,mentionedIISamuel,1。12,andagain,IISamuel,3。35,forthedeathofAbner。ThisfastingofDavid,hesaith,wasfortheobtainingofsomethingforthematGod’shands,aftertheirdeath:becauseafterhehadfastedtoprocuretherecoveryofhisownchild,assoonasheknewitwasdead,hecalledformeat。Seeingthenthesoulhathanexistenceseparatefromthebody,andnothingcanbeobtainedbymen’sfastingforthesoulsthatarealreadyeitherinheavenorhell,itfolloweththattherebesomesoulsofdeadmenthatareneitherinheavennorinhell;andthereforetheymustbeinsomethirdplace,whichmustbepurgatory。Andthuswithhardstraining,hehaswrestedthoseplacestotheproofofapurgatory:whereasitismanifestthattheceremoniesofmourningandfasting,whentheyareusedforthedeathofmenwhoselifewasnotprofitabletothemourners,theyareusedforhonour’ssaketotheirpersons;andwhenitisdoneforthedeathofthembywhoselifethemournershadbenefit,itproceedsfromtheirparticulardamage:andsoDavidhonouredSaulandAbnerwithhisfasting;and,inthedeathofhisownchild,recomfortedhimselfbyreceivinghisordinaryfood。
