  andthebodyandsouljointly,thebodyalive。InthefifthdayoftheCreation,Godsaid,Letthewatersproducereptileanimaeviventis,thecreepingthingthathathinitalivingsoul;theEnglishtranslateit,“thathathlife。“Andagain,Godcreatedwhales,etomnemanimamviventem;whichintheEnglishis,“everylivingcreature。“Andlikewiseofman,Godmadehimofthedustoftheearth,andbreathedinhisfacethebreathoflife,etfactusesthomoinanimamviventem,thatis,“andmanwasmadealivingcreature。“AndafterNoahcameoutoftheark,Godsaith,Hewillnomoresmiteomnemanimamviventem,thatis,“everylivingcreature。“And,“Eatnottheblood,forthebloodisthesoul“;thatis,thelife。Fromwhichplaces,ifbysoulweremeantasubstanceincorporeal,withanexistenceseparatedfromthebody,itmightaswellbeinferredofanyotherlivingcreature,asofman。Butthatthesoulsofthefaithfularenotoftheirownnature,butbyGod’sspecialgrace,toremainintheirbodiesfromtheresurrectiontoalleternity,Ihavealready,Ithink,sufficientlyprovedoutoftheScriptures,inthethirty-eighthChapter。AndfortheplacesoftheNewTestamentwhereitissaidthatanymanshallbecastbodyandsoulintohellfire,itisnomorethanbodyandlife;thatistosay,theyshallbecastaliveintotheperpetualfireofGehenna。

  Thiswindowitisthatgivesentrancetothedarkdoctrine,first,ofeternaltorments,andafterwardsofpurgatory,andconsequentlyofthewalkingabroad,especiallyinplacesconsecrated,solitary,ordark,oftheghostsofmendeceased;andtherebytothepretencesofexorcismandconjurationofphantasms,asalsoofinvocationofmendead;andtothedoctrineofindulgences;thatistosay,ofexemptionforatime,orforever,fromthefireofpurgatory,whereintheseincorporealsubstancesarepretendedbyburningtobecleansedandmadefitforheaven。Formenbeinggenerallypossessed,beforethetimeofourSaviour,bycontagionofthedemonologyoftheGreeks,ofanopinionthatthesoulsofmenweresubstancesdistinctfromtheirbodies;andthereforethatwhenthebodywasdead,thesoulofeveryman,whethergodlyorwicked,mustsubsistsomewherebyvirtueofitsownnature,withoutacknowledgingthereinanysupernaturalgiftofGod’s;thedoctorsoftheChurchdoubtedalongtimewhatwastheplacewhichtheyweretoabidein,tilltheyshouldbereunitedtotheirbodiesintheresurrection,supposingforawhile,theylayunderthealtars:butafterwardtheChurchofRomefounditmoreprofitabletobuildforthemthisplaceofpurgatory,whichbysomeotherChurches,inthislaterage,hasbeendemolished。

  LetusnowconsiderwhattextsofScriptureseemmosttoconfirmthesethreegeneralerrorsIhaveheretouched。AsforthosewhichCardinalBellarminehathallegedforthepresentkingdomofGodadministeredbythePopethanwhichtherearenonethatmakeabettershowofproof,Ihavealreadyansweredthem;andmadeitevidentthatthekingdomofGod,institutedbyMoses,endedintheelectionofSaul:afterwhichtimethepriestofhisownauthorityneverdeposedanyking。ThatwhichthehighpriestdidtoAthaliahwasnotdoneinhisownright,butintherightoftheyoungKingJoash,herson:

  ButSolomoninhisownrightdeposedthehighpriestAbiathar,andsetupanotherinhisplace。Themostdifficultplacetoanswer,ofallthosethatcanbebroughttoprovethekingdomofGodbyChristisalreadyinthisworld,isalleged,notbyBellarmine,noranyotheroftheChurchofRome,butbyBeza,thatwillhaveittobeginfromtheresurrectionofChrist。ButwhetherheintendtherebytoentitlethepresbyterytothesupremepowerecclesiasticalintheCommonwealthofGeneva,andconsequentlytoeverypresbyteryineveryotherCommonwealth,ortoprincesandothercivilsovereigns,Idonotknow。

  Forthepresbyteryhathchallengedthepowertoexcommunicatetheirownkings,andtobethesuprememoderatorsinreligion,intheplaceswheretheyhavethatformofChurchgovernment,nolessthanthePopechallengethituniversally。

  Thewordsare,“VerilyIsayuntoyou,thattherebesomeofthemthatstandhere,whichshallnottasteofdeath,tilltheyhaveseenthekingdomofGodcomewithpower。“*Whichwords,iftakengrammatically,makeitcertainthateithersomeofthosementhatstoodbyChristatthattimeareyetalive,orelsethatthekingdomofGodmustbenowinthispresentworld。Andthenthereisanotherplacemoredifficult:forwhentheApostlesafterourSaviour’sresurrection,andimmediatelybeforehisascension,askedourSaviour,saying,“WiltthouatthistimerestoreagainthekingdomtoIsrael?“heansweredthem,“Itisnotforyoutoknowthetimesandtheseasons,whichtheFatherhathputinHisownpower;butyeshallreceivepowerbythecomingoftheHolyGhostuponyou,andyeshallbemywitnessesbothinJerusalem,andinallJudaea,andinSamaria,anduntotheuttermostpartoftheearth“:*2whichisasmuchastosay,Mykingdomisnotyetcome,norshallyouforeknowwhenitshallcome;foritshallcomeasathiefinthenight;butI

  willsendyoutheHolyGhost,andbyhimyoushallhavepowertobearwitnesstoalltheworld,byyourpreachingofmyresurrection,andtheworksIhavedone,andthedoctrineIhavetaught,thattheymaybelieveinme,andexpecteternallife,atmycomingagain。HowdoesthisagreewiththecomingofChrist’skingdomattheresurrection?AndthatwhichSt。Paulsays,“Thattheyturnedfromidols,toservethelivingandtrueGod,andtowaitforHisSonfromheaven“;*3where“towaitforHisSonfromheaven“istowaitforhiscomingtobekinginpower;whichwerenotnecessaryifhiskingdomhadbeenthenpresent。Again,ifthekingdomofGodbegan,asBezaonthatplace*4wouldhaveit,attheresurrection;whatreasonisthereforChristianseversincetheresurrectiontosayintheirprayers,“Letthykingdomcome“?ItisthereforemanifestthatthewordsofSt。Markarenotsotobeinterpreted。Therebesomeofthemthatstandhere,saithourSaviour,thatshallnottasteofdeathtilltheyhaveseenthekingdomofGodcomeinpower。IfthenthiskingdomweretocomeattheresurrectionofChrist,whyisitsaid,someofthem,ratherthanall?FortheyalllivedtillafterChristwasrisen。

  Buttheythatrequireanexactinterpretationofthistext,lettheminterpretfirstthelikewordsofourSaviourtoSt。PeterconcerningSt。John,“IfIwillthathetarrytillIcome,whatisthattothee?“*uponwhichwasgroundedareportthatheshouldnotdie。Neverthelessthetruthofthatreportwasneitherconfirmed,aswellgrounded;norrefuted,asillgroundedonthosewords;butleftasasayingnotunderstood。ThesamedifficultyisalsointheplaceofSt。Mark。Andifitbelawfultoconjectureattheirmeaning,bythatwhichimmediatelyfollows,bothhereandinSt。Luke,wherethesameisagainrepeated,itisnotimprobabletosaytheyhaverelationtotheTransfiguration,whichisdescribedintheversesimmediatelyfollowing,whereitissaidthat“AftersixdaysJesustakethwithhimPeter,andJames,andJohn“notall,butsomeofhisDisciples,“andleadeththemupintoanhighmountainapartbythemselves,andwastransfiguredbeforethem。Andhisraimentbecameshining,exceedingwhiteassnow;soasnofulleronearthcanwhitethem。AndthereappeareduntothemEliaswithMoses,andtheyweretalkingwithJesus,“etc。SothattheysawChristingloryandmajesty,asheistocome;insomuchas“theyweresoreafraid。“AndthusthepromiseofourSaviourwasaccomplishedbywayofvision。Foritwasavision,asmayprobablybeinferredoutofSt。Luke,thatreciteththesamestory,andsaiththatPeterandtheythatwerewithhimwereheavywithsleep:*2butmostcertainlyoutofMatthew17。9wherethesameisagainrelated;forourSaviourchargedthem,saying,“TellnomanthevisionuntiltheSonofManberisenfromthedead。“Howsoeveritbe,yettherecanfromthencebetakennoargumenttoprovethatthekingdomofGodtakethbeginningtillthedayofjudgement。

  AsforsomeothertextstoprovethePope’spowerovercivilsovereignsbesidesthoseofBellarmine,asthatthetwoswordsthatChristandhisApostleshadamongstthemwerethespiritualandthetemporalsword,whichtheysaySt。PeterhadgivenhimbyChrist;andthatofthetwoluminaries,thegreatersignifiesthePope,andthelessertheking;onemightaswellinferoutofthefirstverseoftheBiblethatbyheavenismeantthePope,andbyearththeking:whichisnotarguingfromScripture,butawantoninsultingoverprincesthatcameinfashionafterthetimethepopesweregrownsosecureoftheirgreatnessastocontemnallChristiankings;andtreadingonthenecksofemperors,tomockboththemandtheScripture,inthewordsoftheninety-firstPsalm,“Thoushalttreaduponthelionandtheadder;theyounglionandthedragonthoushalttrampleunderthyfeet。“

  Asfortheritesofconsecration,thoughtheydependforthemostpartuponthediscretionandjudgementofthegovernorsoftheChurch,andnotupontheScriptures;yetthosegovernorsareobligedtosuchdirectionasthenatureoftheactionitselfrequireth;asthattheceremonies,words,gesturesbebothdecentandsignificant,oratleastconformabletotheaction。WhenMosesconsecratedthetabernacle,thealtar,andthevesselsbelongingtothem,heanointedthemwiththeoilwhichGodhadcommandedtobemadeforthatpurpose:*andtheywereholy。Therewasnothingexorcized,todriveawayphantasms。ThesameMosesthecivilsovereignofIsrael,whenheconsecratedAaronthehighpriestandhissons,didwashthemwithwaternotexorcizedwater,puttheirgarmentsuponthem,andanointedthemwithoil;andtheyweresanctified,toministeruntotheLordinthepriest’soffice,whichwasasimpleanddecentcleansingandadorningthembeforehepresentedthemtoGod,tobeHisservants。

  WhenKingSolomonthecivilsovereignofIsraelconsecratedthetemplehehadbuilt,hestoodbeforeallthecongregationofIsrael;

  andhavingblessedthem,hegavethankstoGodforputtingintotheheartofhisfathertobuildit,andforgivingtohimselfthegracetoaccomplishthesame;andthenprayeduntoHim,first,toacceptthathouse,thoughitwerenotsuitabletoHisinfinitegreatness,andtoheartheprayersofHisservantsthatshouldpraytherein,oriftheywereabsenttowardsit;andlastly,heofferedasacrificeofpeaceoffering,andthehousewasdedicated。*2Herewasnoprocession;theKingstoodstillinhisfirstplace;noexorcizedwater;noAspergesme,norotherimpertinentapplicationofwordsspokenuponanotheroccasion;butadecentandrationalspeech,andsuchasinmakingtoGodapresentofhisnew-builthousewasmostconformabletotheoccasion。

  WereadnotthatSt。JohndidexorcizethewaterofJordan;norPhilipthewateroftheriverwhereinhebaptizedtheeunuch;northatanypastorinthetimeoftheApostlesdidtakehisspittleandputittothenoseofthepersontobebaptized,andsay,inodoremsuavitatis,thatis,“forasweetsavouruntotheLord“;whereinneithertheceremonyofspittle,fortheuncleanness;northeapplicationofthatScripture,forthelevity,canbyanyauthorityofmanbejustified。

  Toprovethatthesoul,separatedfromthebody,livetheternally,notonlythesoulsoftheelect,byespecialgrace,andrestorationoftheeternallifewhichAdamlostbysin,andourSaviourrestoredbythesacrificeofhimselftothefaithful;butalsothesoulsofreprobates,asapropertynaturallyconsequenttotheessenceofmankind,withoutothergraceofGodbutthatwhichisuniversallygiventoallmankind;therearediverseplaceswhichatthefirstsightseemsufficientlytoservetheturn:butsuchaswhenI

  comparethemwiththatwhichIhavebeforeChapterthirty-eight

  allegedoutofthefourteenthofJobseemtomemuchmoresubjecttoadiverseinterpretationthanthewordsofJob。

  AndfirsttherearethewordsofSolomon,“Thenshallthedustreturntodust,asitwas,andthespiritshallreturntoGodthatgaveit。“*Whichmaybearwellenoughiftherebenoothertextdirectlyagainstitthisinterpretation,thatGodonlyknows,butmannot,whatbecomesofaman’sspiritwhenheexpireth;andthesameSolomon,inthesamebook,delivereththesamesentenceinthesenseI
