AndbecausebytheEnemy,theAccuser,andDestroyerismeanttheenemyofthemthatshallbeinthekingdomofGod;thereforeifthekingdomofGodaftertheresurrectionbeupontheearthasintheformerchapterIhaveshownbyScriptureitseemstobe,theenemyandhiskingdommustbeonearthalso。ForsoalsowasitinthetimebeforetheJewshaddeposedGod。ForGod’skingdomwasinPalestine;andthenationsroundaboutwerethekingdomsoftheEnemy;
andconsequentlybySatanismeantanyearthlyenemyoftheChurch。
Thetormentsofhellareexpressedsometimesby“weeping,andgnashingofteeth,“asMatthew,8。12;sometimes,by“thewormofconscience,“asIsaiah,66。24,andMark,9。44,46,48;sometimes,byfire,asintheplacenowquoted,“wherethewormdiethnot,andthefireisnotquenched,“andmanyplacesbesides:sometimes,by“shame,andcontempt,“as,“Andmanyofthemthatsleepinthedustoftheearthshallawake;sometoeverlastinglife;andsometoshame,andeverlastingcontempt。“*Allwhichplacesdesignmetaphoricallyagriefanddiscontentofmindfromthesightofthateternalfelicityinotherswhichtheythemselvesthroughtheirownincredulityanddisobediencehavelost。Andbecausesuchfelicityinothersisnotsensiblebutbycomparisonwiththeirownactualmiseries,itfolloweththattheyaretosuffersuchbodilypainsandcalamitiesasareincidenttothosewhonotonlyliveunderevilandcruelgovernors,buthavealsoforenemytheeternalkingofthesaints,GodAlmighty。Andamongstthesebodilypainsistobereckonedalsotoeveryoneofthewickedaseconddeath。ForthoughtheScripturebeclearforauniversalresurrection,yetwedonotreadthattoanyofthereprobateispromisedaneternallife。ForwhereasSt。Paul,tothequestionconcerningwhatbodiesmenshallrisewithagain,saiththat“thebodyissownincorruption,andisraisedinincorruption;
itissownindishonour,itisraisedinglory;itissowninweakness,itisraisedinpower“;*2gloryandpowercannotbeappliedtothebodiesofthewicked:norcanthenameofseconddeathbeappliedtothosethatcanneverdiebutonce。Andalthoughinmetaphoricalspeechacalamitouslifeeverlastingmaybecalledaneverlastingdeath,yetitcannotwellbeunderstoodofaseconddeath。
Thefirepreparedforthewickedisaneverlastingfire:thatistosay,theestatewhereinnomancanbewithouttorture,bothofbodyandmind,aftertheresurrection,shallendureforever;andinthatsensethefireshallbeunquenchable,andthetormentseverlasting:
butitcannotthencebeinferredthathewhoshallbecastintothatfire,orbetormentedwiththosetorments,shallendureandresistthemsoasbeeternallyburntandtortured,andyetneverbedestroyednordie。Andthoughtherebemanyplacesthataffirmeverlastingfireandtorments,intowhichmenmaybecastsuccessivelyoneafteranotherforever,yetIfindnonethataffirmthereshallbeaneternallifethereinofanyindividualperson;buttothecontrary,aneverlastingdeath,whichistheseconddeath:“Forafterdeathandthegraveshallhavedeliveredupthedeadwhichwereinthem,andeverymanbejudgedaccordingtohisworks;deathandthegraveshallalsobecastintothelakeoffire。Thisistheseconddeath。“*3
Wherebyitisevidentthatthereistobeaseconddeathofeveryonethatshallbecondemnedatthedayjudgement,afterwhichheshalldienomore。
ThejoysoflifeeternalareinScripturecomprehendedallunderthenameofsalvation,orbeingsaved。Tobesavedistobesecured,eitherrespectively,againstspecialevils,orabsolutely,againstallevil,comprehendingwant,sickness,anddeathitself。Andbecausemanwascreatedinaconditionimmortal,notsubjecttocorruption,andconsequentlytonothingthattendethtothedissolutionofhisnature;andfellfromthathappinessbythesinofAdam;itfolloweththattobesavedfromsinistobesavedfromalltheevilandcalamitiesthatsinhathbroughtuponus。AndthereforeintheHolyScripture,remissionofsin,andsalvationfromdeathandmisery,isthesamething,asitappearsbythewordsofourSaviour,who,havingcuredamansickofthepalsy,bysaying,“Sonbeofgoodcheerthysinsbeforgiventhee“;*andknowingthatthescribestookforblasphemythatamanshouldpretendtoforgivesins,askedthem“whetheritwereeasiertosay,Thysinsbeforgiventhee,or,Ariseandwalk“;*2signifyingtherebythatitwasallone,astothesavingofthesick,tosay,“Thysinsareforgiven,“and“Ariseandwalk“;andthatheusedthatformofspeechonlytoshowhehadpowertoforgivesins。Anditisbesidesevidentinreasonthatsincedeathandmiserywerethepunishmentsofsin,thedischargeofsinmustalsobeadischargeofdeathandmisery;thatistosay,salvationabsolute,suchasthefaithfularetoenjoyafterthedayofjudgement,bythepowerandfavourofJesusChrist,whothatcauseiscalledourSaviour。
Concerningparticularsalvations,suchasareunderstood,“astheLordliveththatsavethIsrael,“*thatis,fromtheirtemporaryenemies;and,“ThouartmySaviour,thousavestmefromviolence“;*2
and,“GodgavetheIsraelitesaSaviour,andsotheyweredeliveredfromthehandoftheAssyrians,“*3andthelike,Ineedsaynothing;
therebeingneitherdifficultynorinteresttocorrupttheinterpretationoftextsofthatkind。
Butconcerningthegeneralsalvation,becauseitmustbeinthekingdomofheaven,thereisgreatdifficultyconcerningtheplace。
Ononeside,bykingdom,whichisanestateordainedbymenfortheirperpetualsecurityagainstenemiesandwant,itseemeththatthissalvationshouldbeonearth。Forbysalvationissetforthuntousagloriousreignofourkingbyconquest;notasafetybyescape:andthereforetherewherewelookforsalvation,wemustlookalsofortriumph;andbeforetriumph,forvictory;andbeforevictory,forbattle;whichcannotwellbesupposedshallbeinheaven。
Buthowgoodsoeverthisreasonmaybe,IwillnottrusttoitwithoutveryevidentplacesofScripture。Thestateofsalvationisdescribedatlarge,
“LookuponZion,thecityofoursolemnities;thineeyesshallseeJerusalemaquiethabitation,atabernaclethatshallnotbetakendown;notoneofthestakesthereofshalleverberemoved,neithershallanyofthecordsthereofbebroken。
“ButtherethegloriousLordwillbeuntousaplaceofbroadriversandstreams;whereinshallgonogalleywithoars,neithershallgallantshippassthereby。
“FortheLordisourjudge,theLordisourlawgiver,theLordisourking,hewillsaveus。
“Thytacklingsareloosed;theycouldnotwellstrengthentheirmast;theycouldnotspreadthesail:thenistheagreatspoildivided;thelametaketheprey。
“Andtheinhabitantshallnotsay,Iamsick;thepeoplethatshalldwellthereinshallbeforgiventheiriniquity。“
Inwhichwordswehavetheplacefromwhencesalvationistoproceed,“Jerusalem,aquiethabitation“;theeternityofit,“atabernaclethatshallnotbetakendown,“etc。;theSaviourofit,“theLord,theirjudge,theirlawgiver,theirking,hewillsaveus“;thesalvation,“theLordshallbetothemasabroadmoatofswiftwaters,“etc。;theconditionoftheirenemies,“theirtacklingsareloose,theirmastsweak,thelameshalltakethespoilofthem“;theconditionofthesaved,“Theinhabitantshallnotsay,I
amsick“;andlastly,allthisiscomprehendedinforgivenessofsin,“thepeoplethatdwellthereinshallbeforgiventheiriniquity。“
Bywhichitisevidentthatsalvationshallbeonearth,then,whenGodshallreign,atthecomingagainofChrist,inJerusalem;andfromJerusalemshallproceedthesalvationoftheGentilesthatshallbereceivedintoGod’skingdom:asisalsomoreexpresslydeclaredbythesameprophet,“Andthey“thatis,theGentileswhohadanyJewinbondage“shallbringallyourbrethrenforanofferingtotheLord,outofallnations,uponhorses,andinchariots,andinlitters,anduponmules,anduponswiftbeasts,tomyholymountain,Jerusalem,saiththeLord,asthechildrenofIsraelbringanofferinginacleanvesselintothehouseoftheLord。AndIwillalsotakeofthemforpriestsandforLevites,saiththeLord“:*wherebyitismanifestthatthechiefseatofGod’skingdom,whichistheplacefromwhencethesalvationofusthatwereGentilesshallproceed,shallbeJerusalem:andthesameisalsoconfirmedbyourSaviour,inhisdiscoursewiththewomanofSamariaconcerningtheplaceofGod’sworship;towhomhesaiththattheSamaritansworshippedtheyknewnotwhat,buttheJewsworshippedwhattheyknew,“forsalvationisoftheJews“*2exJudaeis,thatis,beginsattheJews:asifheshouldsay,youworshipGod,butknownotbywhomHewillsaveyou,aswedo,thatknowitshallbebyoneofthetribeofJudah;aJew,notaSamaritan。Andthereforealsothewomannotimpertinentlyansweredhimagain,“WeknowtheMessiasshallcome。“SothatwhichourSavioursaith,“SalvationisfromtheJews,:isthesamethatPaulsays,“ThegospelisthepowerofGodtosalvationtoeveryonethatbelieveth:totheJewfirst,andalsototheGreek。ForthereinistherighteousnessofGodrevealedfromfaithtofaith“;*3fromthefaithoftheJewtothefaithoftheGentile。InthelikesensetheprophetJoel,describingthedayofjudgement,thatGodwould“shewwondersinheaven,andinearth,blood,andfire,andpillarsofsmoke。Thesunshouldbeturnedtodarkness,andthemoonintoblood,beforethegreatandterribledayoftheLordcome。“*4Headdeth,“anditshallcometopass,thatwhosoevershallcalluponthenameoftheLordshallbesaved。ForinMountZionandinJerusalemshallbesalvation。“*5AndObadiah,verse17,saiththesame,“UponMountZionshallbedeliverance;andthereshallbeholiness,andthehouseofJacobshallpossesstheirpossessions,“thatis,thepossessionsoftheheathen,whichpossessionsheexpressethmoreparticularlyinthefollowingverses,bythemountofEsau,thelandofthePhilistines,thefieldsofEphraim,ofSamaria,Gilead,andthecitiesoftheSouth,andconcludeswiththesewords,“thekingdomshallbetheLord’s。“Alltheseplacesareforsalvation,andthekingdomofGod,afterthedayofjudgement,uponearth。Ontheotherside,Ihavenotfoundanytextthatcanprobablybedrawntoproveanyascensionofthesaintsintoheaven;thatistosay,intoanycoelumempyreum,orotheretherealregion,savingthatitiscalledthekingdomofheaven:whichnameitmayhavebecauseGod,thatwaskingoftheJews,governedthembyHiscommandssenttoMosesbyangelsfromheaven;andaftertheirrevolt,sentHisSonfromheaventoreducethemtotheirobedience;andshallsendhimthenceagaintoruleboththemandallotherfaithfulmenfromthedayofjudgement,everlastingly:orfromthat,thatthethroneofthisourGreatKingisinheaven;whereastheearthisbutHisfootstool。ButthatthesubjectsofGodshouldhaveanyplaceashighasHisthrone,orhigherthanHisfootstool,itseemethnotsuitabletothedignityofaking,norcanIfindanyevidenttextforitinHolyScripture。
FromthisthathathbeensaidofthekingdomofGod,andofsalvation,itisnothardtointerpretwhatismeantbytheworldtocome。TherearethreeworldsmentionedintheScripture;theoldworld,thepresentworld,andtheworldtocome。Ofthefirst,St。
Peterspeaks,“IfGodsparednottheoldworld,butsavedNoahtheeighthperson,apreacherofrighteousness,bringingthefloodupontheworldoftheungodly,“etc。*SothefirstworldwasfromAdamtothegeneralflood。Ofthepresentworld,ourSaviourspeaks,“Mykingdomisnotofthisworld。“*2ForHecameonlytoteachmenthewayofsalvation,andtorenewthekingdomofHisFatherbyHisdoctrine。Oftheworldtocome,St。Peterspeaks,“Neverthelessweaccordingtohispromiselookfornewheavens,andanewearth。“*3
ThisisthatworldwhereinChristcomingdownfromheavenintheclouds,withgreatpowerandglory,shallsendHisangels,andshallgathertogetherhiselect,fromthefourwinds,andfromtheuttermostpartsoftheearth,andthenceforthreignoverthem,underhisFather,everlastingly。
