Godfrey,asitchanced,omittingIsobel,hadwalkedlittleeveninthesesweetshadows。Therewerebutthreeothersforwhomhehadfeltdevotioninallhisdays,Mrs。Parsons,histutor,MonsieurBoiset,andhisfriend,ArthurThorburn,whowasgone。ThereforetohimIsobelwaseverything。Asachildhehadadoredher;asawomanshewashisdesire,hisfaithandhisworship。
Ifthisweresowithhim,stillmorewasitthecasewithIsobel,whointruthcaredfornootherhumanbeing。Somethinginhernaturepreventedherfromcontractingviolentfemalefriendships,andtoallmen,exceptafewofability,eachofthemoldenoughtobeherfather,shewastotallyindifferent;indeedmostofthemrepelledher。

Somuchdidthisseemtohertobeso,thatnotwithstandingherlackoffaithinmattersbeyondproofandknowledge,sheneverconceivedofthispassionofhersashavinghadabeginning,orofbeingcapableofanend。Thiscontradictorywomanwouldargueagainstthepossibilityofanyfutureexistence,yetshewasquitecertainthatherloveforGodfrey/had/afutureexistence,andindeedonethatwasendless。
Whenatlengthheputittoherthatherattitudewasmostillogical,sincethatwhichwasdeadanddissolvedcouldnotexistinanyplaceorshape,shethoughtforawhileandrepliedquietly:
