Aboutteno’clockthatnight，theaudiencewaslaughingattheabsurdplay；thePresident’spartywereasmuchamusedasany。
Suddenly，therewasapistolshot。Amomentmoreandawoman’svoicerangoutinasharpcry。Aninstantsenseofdisasterbroughttheaudiencestartledtotheirfeet。TwomenwereglimpsedstrugglingtowardthefrontofthePresident’sbox。
Onebrokeaway，leapeddownontothestage，flourishedaknifeandshouted，“Sicsempertyrannis!“Thenhevanishedthroughtheflies。ItwasBooth，whoseplanshadbeencompletelysuccessful。HehadmadehiswaywithoutinterruptiontowithinafewfeetofLincoln。Atpoint-blankdistance，hehadshothimfrombehind，throughthehead。Intheconfusionwhichensued，heescapedfromthetheatre；fledfromthecity；waspursued；andwashimselfshotandkilledafewdayslater。
