  hadneverseenthepipe!Iwokefromonenightmaretofallintoanother。Onedreadfuldreamwaswithmeallthetime——ofahideous,greenreptilewhichadvancedtowardmeoutofsomeawfuldarkness,slowly,inchbyinch,untilitclutchedmeroundtheneck,and,gluingitslipstomine,suckedthelife’sbloodoutofmyveinsasitembracedmewithaslimykiss。Suchdreamsarenotrestful。Iwokeanythingbutrefreshedwhenthemorningcame。AndwhenIgotupanddressedIfeltthat,onthewhole,itwouldperhapshavebeenbetterifIneverhadgonetobed。Mynerveswereunstrung,andIhadthatgenerallytremulousfeelingwhichis,Ibelieve,aninseparablecompanionofthemoreadvancedstagesofdipsomania。Iatenobreakfast。Iamnobreakfasteaterasarule,butthatmorningIateabsolutelynothing。
