  Next,onthesailorslayinghimuponthehatchwayofthebaggagehold,hesatup,leanedforward,smoothedhiswethairwiththepalmsofhishands,andaskeddully,withoutlookingatanyone:

  Someoneamongthethrongaroundhimexclaimedreprovingly:

  Themanseatedhimselfuponacoilofrope,and,craninghisneckinwolf-likefashiontoeyethebystanders,frowned,letfallhistemplesuponhandsthrustintohisflaxenhair,andfixedhisgazeuponthebarge。

  Standingorsittingaboutinthehotsunshine,peoplestaredathimwithoutstint。Evidentlytheywouldhaveliked,butdidnotdare,toengagehiminconversation。Presentlythebigpeasantalsoarrivedonthescene,and,afterglancingatallpresent,tookoffhishat,andwipedhisperspiringface。Next,agrey-headedoldmanwitharednose,athinwispofbeard,andwateryeyesclearedhisthroat,andinhoneyedtonestooktheinitiative。

  “Wouldyoumindtellingushowitallhappened?“hebegan。

  “WhyshouldIdoso?“retortedtheyoungfellowwithoutmoving。

  Takingaredhandkerchieffromhisbosom,theoldmanshookitoutandapplieditcautiouslytohiseyes。Thenhesaidthroughitsfoldsinthequietaccentsofamanwhoisdeterminedtopersevere:
