  Thepartyhaltedandsatforatimeinaquarryonthehillside。

  “Amazinglyclear,“exclaimedSt。John,identifyingonecleftinthelandafteranother。

  Shesurveyedtheviewwithacertainlookoftriumph。

  Oh,ifshehadbeenhisbride!If,insteadofapicnicparty,thiswasapartyofpatriots,andshe,red-shirtedliketherest,hadlainamonggrimmen,flatontheturf,aiminghergunatthewhiteturretsbeneaththem,screeninghereyestopiercethroughthesmoke!
