  ThecolourlessOctoberskyabovewasthinlycloudedasifbythetrailofwood-firesmoke,andtheairwaswonderfullysaltandbrisk。

  Indeeditwastoocoldtostandstill。Mrs。Ambrosedrewherarmwithinherhusband’s,andastheymovedoffitcouldbeseenfromthewayinwhichherslopingcheekturneduptohisthatshehadsomethingprivatetocommunicate。TheywentafewpacesandRachelsawthemkiss。
