  settingheratlibertytoretirefromthemercenaryservicesshe

  Anotherpowerfulreasonforthismeasurewasthedislikewith

  whichthekingregardedher;notthatshewasdeficientinbirthor

  goodbreeding,butamidstthepolishofhighlifesheoccasionally

  introducedthemostvulgarandprovincialmanners,afaultofall

  othersmostoffensivetotheking,whosedisgustwasfurther

  excitedbytheundisguisedaviditywithwhich,ateveryopportunity,

  shesoughttoturnheradmissiontotheking’sprivatesocietyto

  reignedaround,sheseemedalwaysonthewatchtoseizeevery

  possibleadvantagetoherself。
