For,nowthattheswordisdrawn,themutualandgrowingexasperationleavesonlytheextremepartiesinthefield。Sincethe10thofAugust,andmoreespeciallysincethe21stofJanuary,ithasnolongerbeenaquestionhowtodealwiththeancientregime,ofcuttingawayitsdeadportionsoritstroublesomethorns,ofaccommodatingittomodernrequirements,ofestablishingcivilequality,alimitedmonarchy,aparliamentarygovernment。ThequestionishowtoescapeconquestbyarmedforcetoavertthemilitaryexecutionsofBrunswick,[187]thevengeanceoftheproscribedémigrés,therestorationandtheaggravationoftheoldfeudalandfiscalorderofthings。Boththroughtheirtraditionsandtheirexperience,themassofthecountrypeoplehatethisancientorder,andwithalltheaccumulatedhatredwhichanunceasingandsecularspoliationhascaused。Irrespectiveofcosts,theruralmasseswillneveragainsufferthetax—collectoramongthem,northeexcisemaninthecellar,northefiscalagentonthefrontier。Forthemtheancientregimeisnothingmorethanthesethings;and,infact,theyhavepaidnotaxes,orscarcelyany,sincethebeginningoftheRevolution。Onthismatterthepeople’sideaisfixed,positive,unalterable;andassoonastheyperceiveinthedistantfuturethepossiblere—establishmentofthetaille,thetithe,andtheseignorialrights,theychoosetheirside;

Campedoutthere,facingtheenemy,thosenobleideals,whichinthehandsoftheParisiandemagogueshadturnedintosanguinaryharlots,remainpureandvirginalinthemindsofthesoldiersandtheirofficers。Liberty,equality,therightsofman,thereignofreason——
allthesevagueandsublimeimagesmovedbeforetheireyeswhentheyclimbedtheescarpmentofJemmapesunderastormofgrapeshot,orwhentheywintered,withnakedfeet,amongthesnowsoftheVosges。Theseideas,indescendingfromheaventoearth,werenotdishonoredanddistortedundertheirfeet,theydidnotseethemtransformedintheirhandstofrightfulcaricatures。Thesemenarenotpillarsofclubs,norbrawlersinthesections,northeinquisitorsofacommittee,norhiredinformers,norprovidersforthescaffold。Apartfromthesabbathrevolutionaire,broughtbacktoearthbytheirdanger,andhavingunderstoodtheinequalityoftalentsandtheneedfordiscipline,theydotheworkofmen;theysuffer,theyfast,theyfacebullets,theyareconsciousoftheirgenerosityandtheirsacrifices;
theyareheroes,andtheylookuponthemselvesasliberators。[188]
