Ourboatsproceededtwentymilesupthisriver，2fathomsonthebar，then2-1/2567fathomsItwasnavigablefartherup，buttheydidnotproceedItisquitepossibleforamoderate-sizedvesseltocrossthebaratspringtides，andbeperfectlylandlockedandhiddenamongthetrees。

Thewesternsideiscomposedofthicktrees，andterminatesindeadwood，fromwhichwecalledit`Dead-woodPoint’AftercrossingthebaritbranchesoffinaWandN。Wdirection，thelatterbeingtheprincipalarm，upwhichtheboatswentsome30miles，orabout10beyondthebarracoonFreshwatercanbeobtainedalmostimmediatelyinsidetheentrance，asthestreamrunsdownveryrapidlywiththeebbtideTheleastwatercrossingthebarlow-watersprings

Thepulsebeatwithamazingforce，andfeltasifthumpingagainstthecrownoftheheadThestomachandspleenswelledenormously，givingme，forthefirsttime，anappearancewhichIhadbeendisposedtolaughatamongthePortugueseAtInterrawemetSenhorAsevedo，amanwhoiswellknownbyallwhoevervisitedKilimane，andwhowaspresentedwithagoldchronometerwatchbytheAdmiraltyforhisattentionstoEnglishofficersHeimmediatelytenderedhislargesailinglaunch，whichhadahouseinthestern。

Itseemedasifitwouldhavebeeneasierformetohavediedforthem，thanthattheyshouldallbecutofffromthejoysoflifeingenerouslyattemptingtorendermeaserviceIwouldhereacknowledgemydeepobligationstotheEarlofClarendon，totheadmiralattheCape，andothers，forthekindinteresttheymanifestedinmysafety；
eventheinquiriesmadewereverymuchtomyadvantageIalsoreferwithfeelingsofgratitudetotheGovernorofMozambiqueforofferingmeapassageintheschooner“Zambesi“，belongingtothatprovince；
andIshallneverforgetthegeneroushospitalityofColonelNunesandhisnephew，withwhomIremainedOneofthediscoveriesIhavemadeisthattherearevastnumbersofgoodpeopleintheworld，andIdomostdevoutlytendermyunfeignedthankstothatGraciousOnewhomercifullywatchedovermeineveryposition，andinfluencedtheheartsofbothblackandwhitetoregardmewithfavor。
WiththeunitedtestimonyofCaptainParkerandLieutenantHoskins，addedtomyownobservation，therecanbenoreasonabledoubtbutthattherealmouthoftheZambesiisavailableforthepurposesofcommerce。
ThedeltaisclaimedbythePortuguese，andthesouthernbankoftheLuabo，orCuama，asthispartoftheZambesiissometimescalled，isownedbyindependentnativesoftheCaffrefamily。
ThePortuguesearethusnearthemainentrancetothenewcentralregion；
andastheyhaveoflateyearsshown，inanenlightenedandliberalspirit，theirdesiretodeveloptheresourcesofEasternAfricabyproclaimingMozambiqueafreeport，itistobehopedthatthesamespiritwillleadthemtoinvitemercantileenterpriseuptheZambesi，byofferingfacilitiestothosewhomaybeledtopushcommerceintotheregionslyingfarbeyondtheirterritory。
Theirwishtoco-operateinthenobleworkofdevelopingtheresourcesoftherichcountrybeyondcouldnotbeshownbetterthanbyplacingavillagewithZambesianpilotsattheharborofMitilone，anderectingalight-housefortheguidanceofseafaringmen。

AsfarasIammyselfconcerned，theopeningofthenewcentralcountryisamatterforcongratulationonlyinsofarasitopensupaprospectfortheelevationoftheinhabitantsAsIhaveelsewhereremarked，IviewtheendofthegeographicalfeatasthebeginningofthemissionaryenterpriseItakethelatterterminitsmostextendedsignification，andincludeeveryeffortmadefortheameliorationofourrace，thepromotionofallthosemeansbywhichGodinHisprovidenceisworking，andbringingallHisdealingswithmantoagloriousconsummationEachmaninhissphere，eitherknowinglyorunwittingly，isperformingthewillofourFatherinheaven。

Asthehighlandsonthebordersofthecentralbasinarecomparativelyhealthy，thefirstobjectseemstobetosecureapermanentpaththither，inorderthatEuropeansmaypassasquicklyaspossiblethroughtheunhealthyregionnearthecoast。
Theriverhasnotbeensurveyed，butatthetimeIcamedowntherewasabundanceofwaterforalargevessel，andthiscontinuestobethecaseduringfourorfivemonthsofeachyear。
Themonthsoflowwaterstilladmitofnavigationbylaunches，andwouldpermitsmallvesselsequaltotheThamessteamerstoplywitheaseinthedeepchannelIfasteamerweresenttoexaminetheZambesi，Iwouldrecommendoneofthelightestdraught，andthemonthsofMay，June，andJulyforpassingthroughthedelta；
andthisnotsomuchforfearofwantofwaterasthedangerofbeinggroundedonasandormudbank，andthehealthofthecrewbeingendangeredbythedelay。
InthemonthsreferredtonoobstructionwouldbeincurredinthechannelbelowTeteTwentyorthirtymilesabovethatpointwehaveasmallrapid，ofwhichIregretmyinabilitytospeak，asmentionedalreadyIdidnotvisititBut，takingthedistancebelowthispoint，wehave，inroundnumbers，300milesofnavigableriver。
Abovethisrapidwehaveanotherreachof300miles，withsand，butnomudbanksinit，whichbringsustothefootoftheeasternridge。
Letitnot，however，bethoughtthatavesselbygoingthitherwouldreturnladenwithivoryandgold-dustThePortugueseofTetepickupallthemerchandiseofthetribesintheirvicinity，and，thoughIcameoutbytraversingthepeoplewithwhomthePortuguesehavebeenatwar，itdoesnotfollowthatitwillbeperfectlysafeforotherstogoinwhosegoodsmaybeastrongertemptationtocupiditythananythingIpossessedWhenwegetbeyondthehostilepopulationmentioned，wereachaverydifferentraceOnthelattermychiefhopesatpresentrest。
