andtheMambari，givingonlyafewbitsofprintandbaizeforelephants’tusksworthmorepoundsthantheygaveyardsofcloth，hadproducedthebeliefthattradewiththemwasthrowingivoryaway。
ThedesireoftheMakololofordirecttradewiththesea-coastcoincidedexactlywithmyownconvictionthatnopermanentelevationofapeoplecanbeeffectedwithoutcommerce。
Neithercouldtherebeapermanentmissionhere，unlessthemissionariesshoulddescendtotheleveloftheMakololo，forevenatKolobengwefoundthattradersdemandedthreeorfourtimesthepriceofthearticlesweneeded，andexpectedustobegratefultothembesidesforlettingushavethematall。
ThethreemenwhomIhadbroughtfromKurumanhadfrequentrelapsesofthefever；so，findingthatinsteadofservingmeIhadtowaitonthem，IdecidedthattheyshouldreturntothesouthwithFlemingassoonashehadfinishedhistradingIwasthenentirelydependentonmytwenty-sevenmen，whomImightnameZambesians，forthereweretwoMakololoonly，whiletherestconsistedofBarotse，Batoka，Bashubia，andtwooftheAmbonda。
Thefeverhadcausedconsiderableweaknessinmyownframe，andastrangegiddinesswhenIlookedupsuddenlytoanycelestialobject，foreverythingseemedtorushtotheleft，andifIdidnotcatchholdofsomeobject，Ifellheavilyontheground：somethingresemblingagushofbilealongtheductfromthelivercausedthesamefittooccuratnight，wheneverIturnedsuddenlyround。
