  TheyareallanxioustoplacetheBibleinthehandsofthenatives,and,withabilitytoreadthat,therecanbelittledoubtastothefuture。

  WebelieveChristianitytobedivine,andequaltoallithastoperform;

  thenletthegoodseedbewidelysown,and,nomattertowhatsecttheconvertsmaybelong,theharvestwillbeglorious。

  LetnothingthatIhavesaidbeinterpretedasindicativeoffeelingsinimicaltoanybodyofChristians,forInever,asamissionary,feltmyselftobeeitherPresbyterian,Episcopalian,orIndependent,orcalleduponinanywaytoloveonedenominationlessthananother。

  Myearnestdesireis,thatthosewhoreallyhavethebestinterestsoftheheathenatheartshouldgotothem;andassuredly,inAfricaatleast,self-denyinglaborsamongrealheathenwillnotfailtobeappreciated。

  Christianshaveneveryetdealtfairlybytheheathenandbeendisappointed。

  AtlastIfoundthreeservantswillingtoriskajourneytothenorth;

  andamanofcolornamedGeorgeFleming,whohadgenerouslybeenassistedbyMrHERutherford,amercantilegentlemanofCapeTown,toendeavortoestablishatradewiththeMakololo,hadalsomanagedtogetasimilarnumber;weaccordinglyleftKurumanonthe20thofNovember,andproceededonourjourneyOurservantsweretheworstpossiblespecimensofthosewhoimbibetheviceswithoutthevirtuesofEuropeans,butwehadnochoice,andweregladtogetawayonanyterms。

  ThiswasaCaffrewarinstagethesecond;thethirdstageinthedevelopmentiswhenbothsidesareequallywellarmedandafraidofeachother;

  thefourth,whentheEnglishtakeupaquarrelnottheirown,andtheBoersslipoutofthefray。
