Thepromotionofcommerceoughttobespeciallyattendedto，asthis，morespeedilythananythingelse，demolishesthatsenseofisolationwhichheathenismengenders，andmakesthetribesfeelthemselvesmutuallydependenton，andmutuallybeneficialtoeachother。
Withaviewtothis，themissionariesatKurumangotpermissionfromthegovernmentforatradertoresideatthestation，andaconsiderabletradehasbeentheresult；thetraderhimselfhasbecomerichenoughtoretirewithacompetenceThoselawswhichstillpreventfreecommercialintercourseamongthecivilizednationsseemtobenothingelsebuttheremainsofourownheathenism。
MyobservationsonthissubjectmakemeextremelydesiroustopromotethepreparationoftherawmaterialsofEuropeanmanufacturesinAfrica，forbythatmeanswemaynotonlyputastoptotheslave-trade，butintroducethenegrofamilyintothebodycorporateofnations，noonememberofwhichcansufferwithouttheotherssufferingwithit。

Indeed，totheBoersgenerallythelattertermwouldbequiteinappropriate，fortheyareasober，industrious，andmosthospitablebodyofpeasantry。

Buthowisitthatthenatives，beingsovastlysuperiorinnumberstotheBoers，donotriseandannihilatethem？ThepeopleamongwhomtheyliveareBechuanas，notCaffres，thoughnoonewouldeverlearnthatdistinctionfromaBoer；andhistorydoesnotcontainonesingleinstanceinwhichtheBechuanas，eventhoseofthemwhopossessfire-arms，haveattackedeithertheBoersortheEnglishIfthereissuchaninstance，Iamcertainitisnotgenerallyknown，eitherbeyondorintheCapeColony。
Theyhavedefendedthemselveswhenattacked，asinthecaseofSechele，buthaveneverengagedinoffensivewarwithEuropeans。
