  Oneday,atabigdinner,heannouncedcasuallythattheDirectorshadshiftedontohimaNaturalCuriosity,fromEngland,intheAccountantlineHewasperfectlycorrectMrSilasRiley,Accountant,wasaMOSTcuriousanimal——along,gawky,rawbonedYorkshireman,fullofthesavageself-conceitthatblossom’sonlyinthebestcountyinEnglandArrogancewasamildwordforthementalattitudeofMrSRileyHehadworkedhimselfup,aftersevenyears,toaCashier’spositioninaHuddersfieldBank;andallhisexperiencelayamongthefactoriesoftheNorthPerhapshewouldhavedonebetterontheBombayside,wheretheyarehappywithone-halfpercentprofits,andmoneyischeapHewasuselessforUpperIndiaandawheatProvince,whereamanwantsalargeheadandatouchofimaginationifheistoturnoutasatisfactorybalance-

  sheet。

  Hewaswonderfullynarrow-mindedinbusiness,and,beingnewtothecountry,hadnonotionthatIndianbankingistotallydistinctfromHomeworkLikemostcleverself-mademen,hehadmuchsimplicityinhisnature;and,somehoworother,hadconstruedtheordinarilypolitetermsofhisletterofengagementintoabeliefthattheDirectorshadchosenhimonaccountofhisspecialandbrillianttalents,andthattheysetgreatstorebyhimThisnotiongrewandcrystallized;thusaddingtohisnaturalNorth-countryconceit。
