  is,iftheboymustgointotheworldandfendforhimself,notwiseUnlesshebeoneinathousandhehascertainlytopassthroughmanyunnecessarytroubles;andmay,possibly,cometoextremegriefsimplyfromignoranceoftheproperproportionsofthings。

  NowIndiaisaplacebeyondallotherswhereonemustnottakethingstooseriously——themiddaysunalwaysexceptedToomuchworkandtoomuchenergykillamanjustaseffectivelyastoomuchassortedviceortoomuchdrinkFlirtationdoesnotmatterbecauseeveryoneisbeingtransferredandeitheryouorsheleavetheStation,andneverreturnGoodworkdoesnotmatter,becauseamanisjudgedbyhisworstoutputandanothermantakesallthecreditofhisbestasaruleBadworkdoesnotmatter,becauseothermendoworse,andincompetentshangonlongerinIndiathananywhereelseAmusementsdonotmatter,becauseyoumustrepeatthemassoonasyouhaveaccomplishedthemonce,andmostamusementsonlymeantryingtowinanotherperson’smoney。

  Hetookhislossesseriously,andwastedasmuchenergyandinterestoveratwo-goldmohurraceformaidenekka-ponieswiththeirmaneshogged,asifithadbeentheDerbyOne-halfofthiscamefrominexperience——muchasthepuppysquabbleswiththecornerofthehearth-rug——andtheotherhalffromthedizzinessbredbystumblingoutofhisquietlifeintotheglareandexcitementofalivelieroneNoonetoldhimaboutthesoapandtheblackingbecauseanaveragemantakesitforgrantedthatanaveragemanisordinarilycarefulinregardtothemItwaspitifultowatchTheBoyknockinghimselftopieces,asanover-handledcoltfallsdownandcutshimselfwhenhegetsawayfromthegroom。

  Thisunbridledlicenseinamusementsnotworththetroubleofbreakinglinefor,muchlessriotingover,enduredforsixmonths——

  allthroughonecoldweather——andthenwethoughtthattheheatandtheknowledgeofhavinglosthismoneyandhealthandlamedhishorseswouldsoberTheBoydown,andhewouldstandsteadyInninety-ninecasesoutofahundredthiswouldhavehappenedYoucanseetheprincipleworkinginanyIndianStationButthisparticularcasefellthroughbecauseTheBoywassensitiveandtookthingsseriously——asImayhavesaidsomeseventimesbeforeOfcourse,wecouldn’ttellhowhisexcessesstruckhimpersonally。

  Theywerenothingveryheart-breakingorabovetheaverageHemightbecrippledforlifefinancially,andwantalittlenursing。
