  Noteventhesunsetcouldredeemthedead,soddenlandscapeandrottenblackharboriceuponwhichhelooked。Nosignoflifewasvisible,saveabigblackcrowwinginghissolitarywayacrossaleadenfield。

  Gilbertspeculatedidlyconcerningthatcrow。Washeafamilycrow,withablackbutcomelycrowwifeawaitinghiminthewoodsbeyondtheGlen?Orwasheaglossyyoungbuckofacrowoncourtingthoughtsintent?Orwasheacynicalbachelorcrow,believingthathetravelsthefastestwhotravelsalone?

  Whateverhewas,hesoondisappearedincongenialgloomandGilbertturnedtothecheerierviewindoors。

  AsuddenoutbreakofavirulenttypeofinfluenzaattheGlenanddownatthefishingvillagekeptGilbertsobusyforthenextfortnightthathehadnotimetopaythepromisedvisittoCaptainJim。AnnehopedagainsthopethathehadabandonedtheideaaboutDickMoore,and,resolvingtoletsleepingdogslie,shesaidnomoreaboutthesubject。Butshethoughtofitincessantly。

  OneeveningGilbertabruptlyproposedthattheygodownandseeCaptainJim。WithasinkingheartAnneagreed,andtheysetforth。TwoweeksofkindsunshinehadwroughtamiracleinthebleaklandscapeoverwhichGilbert’scrowhadflown。Thehillsandfieldsweredryandbrownandwarm,readytobreakintobudandblossom;theharborwaslaughter-shakenagain;thelongharborroadwaslikeagleamingredribbon;downonthedunesacrowdofboys,whowereoutsmeltfishing,wereburningthethick,drysandhillgrassoftheprecedingsummer。Theflamessweptoverthedunesrosily,flingingtheircardinalbannersagainstthedarkgulfbeyond,andilluminatingthechannelandthefishingvillage。ItwasapicturesquescenewhichwouldatothertimeshavedelightedAnne’seyes;butshewasnotenjoyingthiswalk。NeitherwasGilbert。Theirusualgood-comradeshipandJosephiancommunityoftasteandviewpointweresadlylacking。Anne’sdisapprovalofthewholeprojectshoweditselfinthehaughtyupliftofherheadandthestudiedpolitenessofherremarks。

  CaptainJimputawaythefishingnetuponwhichhewasworking,andwelcomedthemjoyfully。InthesearchinglightofthespringeveninghelookedolderthanAnnehadeverseenhim。Hishairhadgrownmuchgrayer,andthestrongoldhandshookalittle。Buthisblueeyeswereclearandsteady,andthestaunchsoullookedoutthroughthemgallantandunafraid。

  CaptainJimlistenedinamazedsilencewhileGilbertsaidwhathehadcometosay。Anne,whoknewhowtheoldmanworshippedLeslie,feltquitesurethathewouldsidewithher,althoughshehadnotmuchhopethatthiswouldinfluenceGilbert。ShewasthereforesurprisedbeyondmeasurewhenCaptainJim,slowlyandsorrowfully,butunhesitatingly,gaveitashisopinionthatLeslieshouldbetold。
