  Ifyoucannotmaketherightkindofnoise,youcanatleastmakeaslittleaspossibleofthewrongkind。Oftenthediscordextendstomanners。Publicconveyancesandpublicplacesproducesomanygirlswhoarenotgentle,retiring,shady,attractive。Theyareflingyandsharpandsaucy,withoutbeingpiquant。Theytakeonairswithouthavingthebeautyorthebrilliancywhichalonemakesairsdelightful。

  Theyagonizetomakeanimpression,andtheymakeit,butnotalwaysinthelineoftheirintent。Settingouttobepicturesque,theybecomeuncouth。Theyareridiculouswhentheymeantobeinteresting,andsillywhentheytrytobeplayful。Iftheywouldonlyleaveoffattitudinizing,onewouldheappeased。Itmaynotbepossibletoacquireagreeablemanners,anymorethanapleasantvoice;butitispossibletobequiet。Butnosuspicionofdefectseemsevertohavepenetratedthebosomsofsuchgirls。Theyactasiftheythoughtattentionwasadmiration。Levitytheymistakeforvivacity。Peevishnessiselegance。Boldnessisdignity。

  RudenessissavoirfaireBoisterousnessistheirvulgateforyouthfulhighspirits。

  SometimesIamtemptedtobelievethatitcannotbefinishedtillwehaveflungthemallaway。WhenIreadoftherebelsfightingbare-headed,bare-footed,haggard,andshorn,inragsandfilth,——fightingbravely,heroically,successfully,——Iamreadytomakeaburnt-offeringofourstacksofclothing。I

  feelandfearthatwemustcomedown,astheyhavetoarecklessnessofallincidentals,downtotheroughandruggedfastnessesoflife,downtoverygatesofdeathitself,beforeweshallbereadyandworthytowinvictories。Yetitisnotforthehardestfightstheearthhaseverknownhavebeenmadebythedelicate-handedandpurple-robed。So,intheultimateanalysis,itisneithergold-lacenorragsthatoverpowerobstacles,butthefierysoulthatconsumesbothintheintensityofitsfurnace-heat,bendingimpossibilitiestotheendsofitspassionatepurpose。
