  Amidtheburningturmoilofcarouses,inthecrowdofpeople,seizedbydebauchery,perplexedbyviolentpassions,half-crazyintheirlongingtoforgetthemselves——onlySashawascalmandcontained。Sheneverdranktointoxication,alwaysaddressedpeopleinafirm,authoritativevoice,andallhermovementswereequallyconfident,asthoughthisstreamhadnottakenpossessionofher,butshewasherselfmasteringitsviolentcourse。SheseemedtoFomathecleverestpersonofallthosethatsurroundedhim,andthemosteagerfornoiseandcarouse;sheheldthemallinhersway,foreverinventingsomethingnewandspeakinginoneandthesamemannertoeverybody;forthedriver,thelackeyandthesailorshehadthesametoneandthesamewordsasforherfriendsandforFoma。ShewasyoungerandprettierthanPelageya,buthercaressesweresilent,cold。Fomaimaginedthatdeepinherheartshewasconcealingfromeverybodysomethingterrible,thatshewouldneverloveanyone,neverrevealherselfentire。
