  TowardstheendofNovember,duringathaw,atnineo’clockonemorning,atrainontheWarsawandPetersburgrailwaywasapproachingthelattercityatfullspeed。Themorningwassodampandmistythatitwasonlywithgreatdifficultythatthedaysucceededinbreaking;anditwasimpossibletodistinguishanythingmorethanafewyardsawayfromthecarriagewindows。

  Someofthepassengersbythisparticulartrainwerereturningfromabroad;butthethird-classcarriageswerethebestfilled,chieflywithinsignificantpersonsofvariousoccupationsanddegrees,pickedupatthedifferentstationsnearertown。Allofthemseemedweary,andmostofthemhadsleepyeyesandashiveringexpression,whiletheircomplexionsgenerallyappearedtohavetakenonthecolourofthefogoutside。

  Whendaydawned,twopassengersinoneofthethird-classcarriagesfoundthemselvesoppositeeachother。Bothwereyoungfellows,bothwereratherpoorlydressed,bothhadremarkablefaces,andbothwereevidentlyanxioustostartaconversation。

  Iftheyhadbutknownwhy,atthisparticularmoment,theywerebothremarkablepersons,theywouldundoubtedlyhavewonderedatthestrangechancewhichhadsetthemdownoppositetooneanotherinathird-classcarriageoftheWarsawRailwayCompany。

  Oneofthemwasayoungfellowofabouttwenty-seven,nottall,withblackcurlinghair,andsmall,grey,fieryeyes。Hisnosewasbroadandflat,andhehadhighcheekbones;histhinlipswereconstantlycompressedintoanimpudent,ironical——itmightalmostbecalledamalicious——smile;buthisforeheadwashighandwellformed,andatonedforagooddealoftheuglinessofthelowerpartofhisface。Aspecialfeatureofthisphysiognomywasitsdeath-likepallor,whichgavetothewholemananindescribablyemaciatedappearanceinspiteofhishardlook,andatthesametimeasortofpassionateandsufferingexpressionwhichdidnotharmonizewithhisimpudent,sarcasticsmileandkeen,self-satisfiedbearing。Heworealargefur——orratherastrachan——overcoat,whichhadkepthimwarmallnight,whilehisneighbourhadbeenobligedtobearthefullseverityofaRussianNovembernightentirelyunprepared。Hiswidesleevelessmantlewithalargecapetoit——thesortofcloakoneseesupontravellersduringthewintermonthsinSwitzerlandorNorthItaly——wasbynomeansadaptedtothelongcoldjourneythroughRussia,fromEydkuhnentoSt。Petersburg。
