  TheguestswereAbbeBigliardi,theFrenchconsul,DonRodriguesdeCampomanes,andthefamousDonPablod’Olavides。Everyonespokehismind,andtheambassadorcondemnedthelettersastooferocious。Ontheotherhand,Campomanesapprovedthem,sayingthattheywerenotabusive,andwerewonderfullyadaptedtomypurpose,namely,toforcethereadertodomepromptjustice,werethereadertobethekinghimself。

  OlavidesandBigliardiechoedthissentiment。Mengssidedwiththeambassador,andbeggedmetocomeandlivewithhim,soasnottobeliabletoanymoreinconveniencesfromspyingservants。IdidnotacceptthisinvitationtillIhadbeenpressedforsometime,andInotedtheremarkoftheambassador,whosaidIowedMengsthisreparationfortheindirectaffronthehadreceived。
