  CharitymaybelievethattheoriginalmotivesofMahometwerethoseofpureandgenuinebenevolence;butahumanmissionaryisincapableofcherishingtheobstinateunbelieverswhorejecthisclaimsdespisehisarguments,andpersecutehislife;hemightforgivehispersonaladversaries,hemaylawfullyhatetheenemiesofGod;thesternpassionsofprideandrevengewerekindledinthebosomofMahomet,andhesighed,liketheprophetofNineveh,forthedestructionoftherebelswhomhehadcondemned。TheinjusticeofMeccaandthechoiceofMedina,transformedthecitizenintoaprince,thehumblepreacherintotheleaderofarmies;buthisswordwasconsecratedbytheexampleofthesaints;andthesameGodwhoafflictsasinfulworldwithpestilenceandearthquakes,mightinspirefortheirconversionorchastisementthevalorofhisservants。Intheexerciseofpoliticalgovernment,hewascompelledtoabateofthesternrigoroffanaticism,tocomplyinsomemeasurewiththeprejudicesandpassionsofhisfollowers,andtoemployeventhevicesofmankindastheinstrumentsoftheirsalvation。Theuseoffraudandperfidy,ofcrueltyandinjustice,wereoftensubservienttothepropagationofthefaith;andMahometcommandedorapprovedtheassassinationoftheJewsandidolaterswhohadescapedfromthefieldofbattle。Bytherepetitionofsuchacts,thecharacterofMahometmusthavebeengraduallystained;andtheinfluenceofsuchpernicioushabitswouldbepoorlycompensatedbythepracticeofthepersonalandsocialvirtueswhicharenecessarytomaintainthereputationofaprophetamonghissectariesandfriends。Ofhislastyears,ambitionwastherulingpassion;andapoliticianwillsuspect,thathesecretlysmiledthevictoriousimpostor!attheenthusiasmofhisyouth,andthecredulityofhisproselytes。

  Oneofhiswives,Hafna,thedaughterofOmar,surprisedhimonherownbed,intheembracesofhisEgyptiancaptive:shepromisedsecrecyandforgiveness,hesworethathewouldrenouncethepossessionofMary。Bothpartiesforgottheirengagements;
