Sionwasdeserted;andthevacantspaceofthelowercitywasfilledwiththepublicandprivateedificesoftheAeliancolony,whichspreadthemselvesovertheadjacenthillofCalvary。Theholyplaceswerepollutedwithmountainsofidolatry;and,eitherfromdesignoraccident,achapelwasdedicatedtoVenus,onthespotwhichhadbeensanctifiedbythedeathandresurrectionofChrist。^61Almostthreehundredyearsafterthosestupendousevents,theprofanechapelofVenuswasdemolishedbytheorderofConstantine;andtheremovaloftheearthandstonesrevealedtheholysepulchretotheeyesofmankind。Amagnificentchurchwaserectedonthatmysticground,bythefirstChristianemperor;andtheeffectsofhispiousmunificencewereextendedtoeveryspotwhichhadbeenconsecratedbythefootstepofpatriarchs,ofprophets,andoftheSonofGod。^62
