  Mattpassedout,leavinghimstillshivering。Thenahatredtwistedhisownface,andhesoftlyhurledsavagecursesatthedoor。Herememberedthejewels,andhastenedtothebed,feelingunderthepillowforthebandannabundle。Hecrusheditwithhisfingerstomakecertainthatitstillcontainedthediamonds。AssuredthatMatthadnotcarriedthemaway,helookedtowardthekerosenestovewithaguiltystart。Thenhehurriedlylightedit,filledthecoffee-potatthesink,andputitovertheflame。

  ThecoffeewasboilingwhenMattreturned,andwhilethelattercutthebreadandputasliceofbutteronthetable,Jimpouredoutthecoffee。

  Itwasnotuntilhesatdownandhadtakenafewsipsofthecoffee,thatMattpulledoutthemorningpaperfromhispocket。
