  Alicekepthersprightlychattergoingwhentheysatdown,thoughthetemperatureoftheroomandthesightofhotsoupmighthavediscouragedalessdeterminedgayety。Moreover,thereweredetailsasunpropitiousastheheat:theexpiringrosesexpressednotbeautybutpathos,andwhatfaintodourtheyexhaledwasnorivaltothelustyemanationsoftheBrusselssprouts;attheheadofthetable,Adams,sittinglowinhischair,appearedtobeunabletoflattentheuprisingwaveofhisstarchedbosom;andGertrude\'smannerandexpressionwereofarecognizablehostilityduringthelongperiodofvainwaitingforthecupsofsouptobeemptied。OnlyMrs。Adamsmadeanyprogressinthisdirection;

  theothersmerelyfeinting,nowandthenliftingtheirspoonsasiftheyintendedtodosomethingwiththem。
