  “Yes,“heanswered,“norweretheEldersangrywiththePrinceoverthismatter。Theysaidthattheirmessengerhadexceededhisauthority,sincetheyhadnevertoldhimtocurseMerapi,andmuchlessattempttokillher,andthatthePrincedidrighttoslayonewhowouldhavedonemurderbeforehisroyaleyes。Stilltheyaddedthatthecurse,havingoncebeenspokenbythispriest,wouldsurelyfalluponMerapiinthiswayorinthat。“

  “Whatthenshouldshedo,Jabez?“

  “Idonotknow,Scribe。Ifshereturnstoherpeople,perchanceshewillbeabsolved,butthenshemustsurelymarryLaban。Itisforhertojudge。“

  “Andwhatwouldyoudoifyouwereinherplace,Jabez?“

  Neartomylodginganothermanmetme,andthemoonlightshiningonhisfaceshowedmetheterribleeyesofKi。
