  MadameOlivaexpressedherthanksforthisbythrowingakissofthehandtothepresidentandthejudges,andthenhastilyfollowedtheofficer,whoopenedthedooroftheadjoiningroom。Asitswungback,aloudcryofachildwasheard,andMadameOliva,whowasstandinguponthethreshold,turnedherfairfacebacktothepresidentwithatriumphantexpression,andsmiled。

  Shesprangforward,andthedoorclosedbehindher。
