  Evidently,thejudicialcomedyissimplyaparade;theymakeuseofitasoneoftherespectablemeans,amongotherslessrespectable,toexterminatepeoplewhoseopinionsarenotwhattheyshouldbe,orwhobelongtotheproscribedclasses;[33]Samson,atParis,andhiscolleaguesintheprovinces,theexecution—platoonsofLyonsandNantes,aresimplythecollaboratorsofmurderersproperlysocalled,whilelegalmassacrescompleteothermassacrespureandsimple。

  Onestimatingthevalueofaforestyoubeginbydividingitsvegetationintotwoclasses;ontheonehandthefull—growntrees,thelargeormedium—sizedoaks,beechesandaspens,and,ontheother,thesaplingsandtheundergrowth。Inlikemanner,inestimatingsociety,youdividetheindividualscomposingitintotwogroups,oneconsistingofitsnotablesofeverykindanddegree,andtheother,ofthecommonrunofmen。Iftheforestisanoldoneandhasnotbeentoobadlymanaged,nearlythewholeofitsseculargrowthisfoundinitsclustersoffull—growntrees。Nearlyalltheusefulwoodistobefoundinthematureforest。Afewthousandlargehandsometreesandthethreeorfourhundredthousandsaplings,youngandold,ofthereserve,containmoreusefulandvaluablewoodthanthetwentyorthirtymillionsshrubs,bushesandheathersputtogether。Itisthesameinacommunitywhichhasexistedforalongtimeunderatolerablystrictsystemofjusticeandpolice;almosttheentiregainofasecularcivilizationisfoundconcentratedinitsnotables,which,takingitallinall,wasthestateofFrenchsocietyin1789。[48]

  Letusfirstconsiderthemostprominentpersonages。—Itiscertain,that,amongthearistocracy,thewealthiestandmostconspicuousfamilieshadceasedtorenderservicesproportionatetothecostoftheirmaintenance。MostoftheseigniorsandladiesoftheCourt,theworldlybishops,abbés,andparliamentariansofthedrawing—room,knewbutlittlemorethanhowtosolicitwithaddress,makeagracefulparadeofthemselvesandspendlavishly。Anill—
