  TheMakololowomenworkbutlittleIndeed,thefamiliesofthatnationarespreadoverthecountry,oneortwoonlyineachvillage,asthelordsofthelandTheyallhavelordshipovergreatnumbersofsubjectedtribes,whopassbythegeneralnameMakalaka,andwhoareforcedtorendercertainservices,andtoaidintillingthesoil;buteachhashisownlandundercultivation,andotherwiselivesnearlyindependent。

  TheyareproudtobecalledMakololo,buttheothertermisoftenusedinreproach,asbetokeninginferiorityThisspeciesofservitudemaybetermedserfdom,asithastoberenderedinconsequenceofsubjectionbyforceofarms,butitisnecessarilyverymildItissoeasyforanyonewhoisunkindlytreatedtomakehisescapetoothertribes,thattheMakololoarecompelledtotreatthem,toagreatextent,ratheraschildrenthanslavesSomemasters,whofailfromdefectoftemperordispositiontosecuretheaffectionsoftheconqueredpeople,frequentlyfindthemselvesleftwithoutasingleservant,inconsequenceoftheabsenceandimpossibilityofenforcingafugitive-slavelaw,andthereadinesswithwhichthosewhoarethemselvessubjectedassistthefugitivesacrosstheriversincanoesTheMakolololadiesareliberalintheirpresentsofmilkandotherfood,andseldomrequiretolabor,exceptinthewayofbeautifyingtheirownhutsandcourt-yards。

  Theydrinklargequantitiesofboyaloaoro-alo,thebuzaoftheArabs,which,beingmadeofthegraincalledholcussorghumor“durasaifi“,inaminutestateofsubdivision,isverynutritious,andgivesthatplumpnessofformwhichisconsideredbeautiful。

  Muchgreaterinfluencewillbegainedbystudyinghowyoumayinducethemtoactaright,withtheimpressionthattheyaredoingitoftheirownfreewillOurserviceshavingnecessarilybeenallintheopenair,whereitismostdifficulttoaddresslargebodiesofpeople,preventedmyrecoveringsoentirelyfromtheeffectsofclergyman’ssorethroatasIexpected,whenmyuvulawasexcisedattheCape。
